What grade is this 1867 shield nickel without rays? What is it worth?

    It has severe damage, so will not straight-grade. Details grade maybe fine?

    I would guess maybe $15-$20 retail? Don’t really know, though.

    The pits on the obverse hurt the value as well as the darker environmental discoloration. I would avoid buying a coin like this. A very rough guess but I think you would be lucky if someone offered you $8-10 for it.

    I would hold out for one without the damage.

    1876 has the highest mintage of the shield nickels. With the damage I'd pass on that one and look for a better example. Just remember, buying a damaged coin is easy, trying to sell one not so much.
