Hole in mailer...Phew!

JimWJimW Posts: 564 ✭✭✭✭

Opened my mailbox today to see the much-anticipated padded envelope for a coin I was expecting.
Pulled it out and there was about a 3" hole in the side.
I immediately thought of all the shipping issues of late and figured it was empty.
Nope... coin was well packaged and fully intact inside :)
I will say there was a bright label saying 'Signature Required' - which of course I never signed for.
Glad to not have to navigate the nightmare of a missing coin in that situation.
Hope y'all are having a great holiday!

I recently had a coin order delivered by USPS. When I got it the envelope was completely opened at one end and the coins were gone. I was fortunate to be able to have the seller replace the coins. Note: the USPS had it in the system and did not track it for over 30 days. They found it laying under a sorter (had been there weeks un-noticed by USPS employees). The excuse was of course "Covid". Just wonder who ripped off the coins?

    Yes, you are lucky.

Last week Monday I was handed an empty box by the UPS driver. I handed it back and told him to look at it. Someone had retapped the end. Somewhere a UPS employee is sitting with 9 Dan Carr coins. Some only had 4 or 5 minted. It has caused me to rethink collecting.

Here's mine from USPS. The seller would not do anything because the package was delivered. Oh well.....

Sounds like poor packaging. Put it in one of those small boxes rather than an envelope, tape it up well, and insure it well.

Think of all the money the PO makes off selling signature confirmation on packages that never get signed for. They deserve a massive class action suit.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I send nothing of value through the mail. What is the downside to employees of all the delivering agencies for stealing the package or coins inside or anything of value. A small slap on the wrist? Would the agencies even waste the time investigating the loss. Its worth taking the chance of stealing a valuable object. I have and will continue to hand deliver my coins to be graded to PCGS. I attend the shows and turn my coins over in person.... Sorry I do Not Trust any delivery agency.

I’ve noticed that several of the sellers I use tape the flip to the inside of the envelope. Works good 😉

My favorite USPS story... many years ago I bought an 8 reales with a scarce counter stamp from a well known east coast dealer who always pops the slab into a small padded mailer, licks the glue strip and sends it off..
Somewhere on my end of the route I assume, it seems a package of wine bottles broke and soaked all the mail nearby. This completely dissolved the glue strip on the mailer.. fortunately it made it to my po box intact.
I let the dealer know and suggested he at least add a bit of packing tape to his mailers..
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I got another fairly pricey coin from the same dealer...Still dropping them into a small envelope and lickin the glue! 😄
