1868 Shield Nickel With Repunched Date

Don't know why but I just love these! This one came in the mail yesterday, leaning towards F-28 on this one based on the date position, especially the 8 on the ball and the 6 slightly away from it. Also seems to have some interesting marks on the 5 on the reverse.

The dies used in production of the early date Shield Nickels often only lasted for about 15,000 strikes so there were many, many dies used. They also seem to have an unusually high number of repunchings so there are lots of varieties and not all are listed in the books that have been published.

    All glory is fleeting.

Nice nickel.... and thanks for the detail pictures. The marks by the 5 look like die work marks... JMO... Cheers, RickO
