1828 capped Bust Dime, Large Date, Curl base 2.

EddiEddi Posts: 509 ✭✭✭✭✭

Only 2 dime varieties exist for the year 1828. This is an example of the JR-2 variety, distinguished by a larger date and a curled base in the '2' in the date.

JR-2 is (only) described as R-3 and the scarcer of the two varieties, but, in my experience it is deceptively difficult to find in better grades. This example has nice toning and is actually quite nice, but it does have a small nick at the rim above the cap.

My simple question: would this keep this coin from grading cleanly, and without a details designation?

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

I think it will straight grade....certainly worth a try. I have seen rim dings on straight graded coins... yours is quite minor. Cheers, RickO

For a coin that's almost 200 years old I think that a small "Ding" here or there would matter, Take a look at the 1933 20$ gold Saint and look at her forward Knee it has several "wacks" on it and it still graded.

I doubt the nick would matter.

I feel it would pass. I'm not positive of this, but I feel they give a little slack for coins of this age, then that's my opinion. I would have it graded.

I think it would be straight graded but might be dropped by 5 points from its actual wear grade.

    I would think details.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
