REc'd a sales tax update from E-Bay today

If posted before, kindly ignore this post. I can't read anyway.

"We‘re working diligently to ensure that state sales tax is accurately applied in bullion, coins, and paper currency categories. On October 13, 2021, we launched a new sales tax enhancement intended to improve the taxability of items related to legal tender. Upon rollout, we became aware that certain items were incorrectly taxed.

To address the issue, we’ve updated state sales tax rules and implemented new state sales tax rules in Arkansas and Ohio. We continue to review all state sales tax rules for bullion, coins, and paper currency categories, and we’re working with Vertex, a leading global provider of trusted tax software and solutions, to ensure they are accurately applied.

Buyer refunds for incorrect state sales tax

We’re issuing refunds to buyers who reached out to eBay regarding incorrectly charged state sales tax. Please advise your buyers to contact eBay Customer Service if they believe an item they purchased was incorrectly taxed. We are reviewing and processing refund requests as quickly as possible.

We understand that these issues may impact our sellers as well as our buyers, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We appreciate your patience as we continue working on updates and improvements to these unique categories".

As always, thank you for selling on eBay

Well it didn't work for Ohio. Here is a PCGS Gold Eagle. Still applying sales tax:

eBay continues to charge me for sales tax in Florida. It shouldn’t be difficult to tweak the software to correct the problem.

I'm located in South Carolina where there is no Sales Tax in Coins and Currency. I bought an item in early September and they slapped around $80 in Sales Tax on the purchase. It took four phone calls and about a month but I finally got the refund. Until they fix this problem and let everyone know, I won't buy any more Coins and Currency on eBay - it's just not worth the hassle.

What category was that listed in? If it's not in "bullion", it may not be considered as such.

  • I know eBay was/is still charging it for Kansas even though sales tax on gold/silver are supposed to be exempt.

Interesting that others are saying they're charged for Florida, South Carolina, and Ohio.. I haven't seen that be the case for my buyers (though in October the sales tax was being incorrectly charged for Florida I remember). Wonder what the difference here is & why some are being charged and some not.

Hope they get this fixed quickly... It's been an ongoing issue for a long time now. To me this partially highlights how baffling the original decision by the SC was.. If a company like eBay can't get the sales tax collection right, how can smaller sellers be expected to handle all of this properly? The thresholds for collection are quite low imo.

I really didn't pay attention, but the Ohio repeal also included any coins with a precious metal content of over 90%, be it silver, gold, palladium or platinum.

if they are that good, it should not require a request for a refund

Agreed. It's BS that the buyer has to take the time and call eBay to get these refunds when they can offer credits or reimburse Paypal accounts. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right number to call. eBay stinks.

Ebay has been illegally collecting sale tax for over a year now.
It takes dozens of calls and takes months to get your money back. :/
Ebay has collected many thousands of dollars if not millons over the course of a year nationwide, if it was costing them many thousands the problem would have been fixed 11 months ago.

Ebay will rip you off !

    Ebay hasn't fixed a thing!
I just bought a coin and was charged sale tax when I shouldn't have been. :/

But it is hard for ebay to categorize things, especially if the seller puts it in the wrong category or doesn't fill in the item specifics.

I'm in Ohio and Ebay owes me a lot of sales tax. I'll be making that call tomorrow. Thanks for posting, I would have not known about the July repeal that took effect in October without this post. Happy holidays !
