USPS signature confirmation

So I just got a 1 oz gold piece delivered by USPS. The carrier rang the doorbell and left. I found the package well after the carrier was gone. Looking at the tracking information, it says that the parcel was left with an individual and I signed for it. I’m pretty disturbed by this. If I hadn’t been home and the package was stolen I’d have no recourse. Thoughts?

with covid, usps has authorized carriers to not get required sigs and is allowing the carrier to sign for the drop off. Some are getting sigs, some are not. Mine is.

Repetition of ignorance is ignorance raised to the power two.

I just had a registered mail package delivered. The carrier did not have me sign. They said they would take care of it. She said if I was not home I would have needed to pick it up at the local branch.

Yep, unfortunately this is the NEW policy.
All because of Covid, I guess. I too, had experienced the same result when I was expecting my last package. No sig asked for. Left at the door. Yes, scary. Probably, when you go to "tracking". The only solution of your package being
safe from theft would be to enter the change to,"pick up" personally at the post office? Good Luck guys! ;)

I don’t mind that the USPS didn’t get my signature. I DO mind that they claim to have left it with an individual, and that I signed for it. That is simply false.
Had it been stolen, the company I purchased it from would tell me to pound sand because USPS recorded that I signed for it.

    It's an "electronic signature".

It's actually on the shipper. You have the ability as the shipper to mandate an actual signature. Yours didn't.

I’m not sure you understand. The tracking information says, “left with an individual” and “signed by halfpence”, but of course, my real name was used.

I understand that. But they now allow an electronic signature. I don't know if they scan it "left with individual". Mine usually just says left at residence.

One day, I came home and there was $9000 in gold on the front stoop from the Mint. Since the Mint didn't require a signature, it was just left there and scanned simmering like "signed by jmlanzaf. Left at residence"

Do not know what the policy was, but here is the current policy from the 11/19/21 'USPS Coronavirus Update':

    Source ("Delivery" Section; downloaded 12/11/21)

If I interpret the policy correctly, the carrier is supposed to interact with the recipient from a 'social distance', or follow the normal "notice left" procedure.

My mail gets delivered the same way. Says I signed but I am not involved.

  • I believe they are supposed to verify you're home, but they can sign on your behalf due to Covid. Unfortunately I'm guessing that a lot of the folks responsible for delivery don't do the first part. Guessing that won't get better over the next couple weeks due to the Christmas rush so probably prudent to keep good watch if you're able to

Not saying that it always happens, but the USPS carrier is supposed to interact with the recipient when a signature is required.

There is even a video on "USPS TV" (YouTube) that describes the current procedure.

I once mailed a package, the USPS employee asked me to choose "electronic signature" yes or no on the machine, and he told me it was going to be "electronic signature" at the destination due to the pandemic no matter what I chose.

One of the benefits of selling cheap crap is that none of this matters much when it comes to shipping it. ;)

My last shipment got delivered to my apartment locked mailbox which is not ideal but better than left at a doorstep. They told me this time it will be signed for at my door by me. Who knows? I am not going to ship my coins until we ge back to the old signature way

  • Earlier in the year I had a carrier deliver an insured package to the wrong address where someone actually signed my name. After I got home from work I walked around my complex and knocked on the doors of all nearby neighbors. I thought someone would just turn it over and claim they made a mistake. No one admitted having the package but it mysteriously turned up on my porch later that evening. I guess my mentioning my intent to get the police involved rattled the receiver and they got cold feet. I had the same worry that I would have been screwed had the package not turned up. As far as eBay was concerned the the package had been delivered and signed for.

The OP should take the issue up with the local postmaster, or the carrier directly if they don't want to get him/her in trouble.

FWIW, UPS has the same policy. A friend had a package delivered that required a signature, and the UPS guy stood on the other side of the screen door, asked her for her name, write it on his screen and left. (This was his second attempt as no one was home on first attempt).

All delivery people are slammed this time of year due to the volume.

They have been doing this for the last year. I want down to the post office and complained because of it and they told me it was because of covid and I have not used them since.

The USPS used to put a card in your mailbox if you weren't home and bring your package back to the post office where you could bring the card in and pick up your package. This way they didn't get stolen.

They still do, depending on how it was sent.

The packages requiring signature that I received over the year, had the carrier knock on the door and interact (used electronic signature), or left a note to pick up at the P.O.. Cheers, RickO

If I am given an option, I prefer Fed ex over USPS. I have had coins come through USPS that had signature confirmation, and I have not had to sign for one yet. They always just put it in the mailbox..... For Fed Ex, I have to sign or they leave a slip on my door.

During Covid, I had a $5000 gold set left in my stoop by FedEx. They had similar covid exceptions.

UPS, Fedex and USPS do not require a signature. Within the last month I received $2k med and 2 packages of $3k coins. Just left on the front porch.

Except for the 99% of coins that they won't sell, of course.
