PCGS On-line cert notice a real step forward...

burfle23burfle23 Posts: 2,453 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hate to say it, but NGC updates their on-line certs wit a note it is a possible counterfeit holder when they have reports of counterfeit coins/ holders using their valid cert numbers. They also have images on-line for verification as well.

Many PCGS certs have no on-line images and one can only hope there are past auctions with images listed for comparison...

This particular counterfeit/ counterfeit's on-line cert shows the possible issue, which should make a potential buyer a little more cautious prior to a purchase!

That's very interesting @burfle23. Here's a close up of the notice.

    And the text:

    PCGS wrote:
    IMPORTANT NOTICE

Certification number 27866179 has been temporarily DEACTIVATED as a precaution due to its unauthorized use on a known counterfeit circulating the market. Please contact PCGS customer Service at info@pcgs.com if you own the item or call (800) 447-8848 for further information.

I'm guessing that even if there's a TrueView, CoinFacts, or SecurePlus image, it wouldn't be visible with that notice since cert verification page is disabled.

I do have quite a few PCGS coins without photos but I'll go out of my way to look for Gold Shield and verify a TrueView exists. Here's one of my less expensive Morgans that I did that on:

I will say that I think NGC has a ways to go as well because they don't include PhotoVision on cert verification as the slab photos are often very dark so that it may be difficult to make out the coin details . I have a number tokens that have PhotoVision but no online way to access the images like PCGS does for TrueViews.

I agree it would be nice for PCGS to:

    1. Add slab photos, like the Gold Shield slab photos they do in their overseas offices
    2. Keep the cert verification up with a counterfeit notice when counterfeiting is occurring

Here's an example Gold Shield slab photo:

Yes, but at least there are images! Most of the counterfeited PCGS holders use active certs with NO images available, a shortcoming in my and many of my Group members opinions! Look this fake up; at least there is a past auction listing to find images of (genuine coin from the auction listing on the right)...

It makes sense to counterfeit coins with no online images available.

Ideally, either PCGS would do slab photos for all coins, or over time buyers will prioritize Gold Shield coins over non-Gold Shield coins and sellers will start to prioritize that as well due to the price differential. I've already seen more Gold Shield / TrueViews on inexpensive coins so it's happening, but perhaps not as fast as if it was done by fiat.

Every coin graded by PCGS should have a high resolution image available online. It’s 2021, last I checked.

They don't, and it is still 2021.

How would or should PCGS motivate current owners of PCGS Coins that have no online photos, get the coins imaged by PCGS.

Sounds like an impossible task, but should they try?

In 2020 we began including Near-Field Communication (NFC) tags in every coin and banknote we holder. These tags verify both the authenticity of the coin and the holder itself. This offers protection well beyond a notification of possible counterfeiting or the comparison of online images.

I love seeing coins like this for sale... :#

Like I'm going to buy a $55,000 coin that nobody cares enough to TrueView.
Hard pass & good luck selling it.

Coins that were graded prior to TrueView sell every day. I am sure some in the millions.

Some collectors like the older holders prior to trueviews and are not likely going to lose their rattler, OGH, doily or other desirable holders for newer technologies. You can request that your older, collectable holder be trueviewed through the holder without losing its collectability.

Collectors love folks like this, willing to pass on a coin for the most trivial of issues. Less competition for those who know what they are looking at.

Cool technology but I don't see how it helps with coins prior to the new holder?

Great is PCGS going to offer to imbed this tech into my rattler or OGH at no charge? ;)

It is obviously an advantage for many collectors to see an image of the certified coin they are considering on the on-line cert; when I don't and I don't know the series well I look for other comparable images of the coin on PCGS CoinFacts, etc and ask others who do...

Counterfeiting will continue to evolve. As each option is closed, these skilled charlatans bring forth the next dodge - which they have already developed. It is, and will continue to be, a never ending battle. The crime has existed for as long as there has been mediums of exchange.... Cheers, RickO
