Coin Show Report Dec 4-5 Fayetteville, NC

Sorry, a little late, but been kinda busy:
This is our clubs annual coin show we have in December every year, been setting up at this show for 20+ years, and attending since the age of 7. ( 51 now). Over the years I mainly do this show to meet folks in area, and let people know who don't already I'm in town with a local shop. We get a few dealers from around about 200-250 miles out. There were about 23 tables which included a couple of dual tables. First one in over 2 years here due to covid. Coin club spent a little money on advertising this time around, as well as me and the other guy across town telling everybody who came in each of our shops. It paid off. One of the best crowds I have seen at our local show since I was a kid in the 70''s early 80's attending. Not only were the bullion buyers , hoarders, preppers in attendance, but so were the oldtime pure collectors you used to see in the 80;s buying various dates and coins for books, set completion, just to have a type coin , etc.
This area has always been somewhat depressed price wise, so many dealers that are pricey didn't get what they were asking here in town, so those that adjusted, did well, others who stayed firm did not. With the recent drop, Silver priced fair around 25-27 sold out fairly quickly, eagles up to about 30 sold well, beyond that no. 90% I sold all mine at 17.5 to 18x and it went fairly quickly, couple of dealers next to me had a pile in buckets, but were at 20x, sold very little. My biggest problem is their asking the 20x, but aren't paying any more than the folks like me selling at 17.5 to 18.
Small gold sold well, larger 1 oz not so much. (but that's typically the same thing I run into operating the shop locally). World gold sold at spot or just a little over, the gold American Eagles and such had good size premiums, like 1/10ths at 210-215, and 1/4. oz spot plus 25-50 bucks. I did not bring any generic dollars, because I usually wholesale em, but probably could have sold them here. A few dealers had them, but were asking really high prices for common Peace and 21 Morgans and culls and they were not selling but one at a time. Lots of lower grade raw type on floor, and some nicer, but not higher dollar value certified type. Lot of various Carson City certified and raw Morgans on floor, some sold. What was not selling was the GSA dollars, a dealer friend of mine brought a stack and was asking current pricing, but no intrest at all at those levels. I knew this going in and sold mine on ebay just prior. Most of the dealers I talked with did well, the ones who had esoteric or non intresting stuff did not. One guy selling nothing but world notes, I don't think sold a thing. Also, one guy who sells nothing but cleaned and scrubbed type didn't do much either. (apparently people have caught on and are more cautious buyers which is a good thing.
Couple of neat items on floor, one guy had two nice MS-61 Bechtlers, there was a real nice 1807 draped bust half on floor under-graded IMO. One guy had US currency in abundance, didn't do as well on sat becuase he didn't put it out for viewing, I told him to spread it out, so people can see, so on Sunday, using a nearby table space, he spread them out and got a lot of action. He sold a battleship, woodchopper, red large size 1923 $ and some other neat stuff. I did not see much being brought into sale from the walkin public, but a few misc coins, nothing significant or large scale. I confirmed this with another dealer who knows everybody.
Did have one guy bring in a nice 1841-D $5 XF but he wasn't selling it, he showed it around to several people to get some attention. I figured the show would have drained out the local sellers for a few weeks in shop, but actually past two days since have been buying at shop over counter pretty steady.

Sorry for being long

    Great report Jim,
As you mentioned, the show was very busy. I also saw the Bechtlers and thought hard about looking closer.

It was good to see you after all this time even if you were so busy that all I could do was say "hey" and shake your hand.

The kind of report that gives a reader a feel for the real (not trophy) coin market. I like it!
