Has it really been EIGHTY years? I'm also quite surprised FDR's famous speech was less than five minutes. It may also surprise you that this would be the fifth and last time the US has ever declared war (War of 1812, Mexican-American, Spanish-American, WWI were the others).

    Morning,

Thank You to My Father, part of the Greatest Generation!

    Hillbilly West Virginia; B 1921
Enlisted US Army: June 1940. War was only a matter of time! Joined an Engineering Battalion, was told besides a few explosions coming your way, there were almost no Bullets in Combat, so he said "Sign Me Up"! After the war he said that was the Biggest Crock of Sheiet he ever heard!! Almost got Shot 10,000,000 times!
Arrived N Africa 1942, Tobruk (Advanced Engineering Unit attached to the British HQ unit), Then re-joined the US troops after 3 months, El Alemaine, Tripoli and eventually several Rommel Tank Battles. Joined with Patton HQ unit in 1943 forward.
Invasions, El Alemein, Tripoli, Sicily, Palermo, Anzio Italy, liberated Rome, through France, liberated Paris, Battle of the Bulge and was with Patton through Liberation of Berlin. Went to Japan July 1945. Thankfully was after the surrender before he arrived, stayed 2 months and because of his Invasion scores he was mustered out 2 months later. (1 Point for each land Invasion During WW11 the soldier was involved in, My Father had 4 points, Higher Score First Out! Most possible, usually 5/6)

Went to University of Virginia 1946-1950, Law Degree. Re-Joined US Army June 1950 (War was on the way and he needed a way to pay for his PHD and Ex Wife's Debts), Arrived in Korea in end of 1951, was at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, several others. Out in 1954.

Won almost every medal you can get in the Army except Medal of Honor, one of only 6 Soldiers awarded the Highest medal from France bestowed upon Allied Foreign Soldiers (Audie Murphy being one of the others), 2 Purple Hearts and a whole chest full of medals!

PHD in Law 1956, Senior Counsel for the California Division of Real Estate, then in Charge of the Real Estate Division until death 1973, Drunk Driver Hit & Run, Caught and was fined after Widowing a Mother with 5 kids!

    Now that's some service!

    Thanks

    YeeHaw!

    Neil

My uncle was at Pearl Harbor I believe on the California. In the confusion and chaos of the tragedy, the Navy thought he had passed away and his obituary was in his hometown newspaper in Logansport, IN.
