Kennedy Half Dollar

I got a Kennedy Half Dollar in change last night at the gas station. The cashier assured me that it was "real money." Whew!

Post some pics... maybe it's a Sooper rare error. Which way is Kennedy facing?

It's a 1994-P in excellent condition. The last time I remember getting interesting coins in change was during the 2008? economic downturn. Maybe people are raiding the coin jar stash again? If so, not a good sign.
AND......the price of gas was $5.15 a gallon! That might have something to do with it!
Joey Baby.....what's so funny about me paying $5.15 a gallon for gas? Somebody has a sick sense of humor. I'm not laughing.
I got a 1991 D half in change 2 days ago.
The banks & CU's in my area are still having problems getting quarters and pennies.
Because they can't get quarters they are ordering halves.
Half dollars half consequences. I got one the other day too. $3.15 a gallon here - Joey drives an electric car
Holy cow! $5.15 for gas! Where? I thought you lived in southern Cali like me……it’s $4.40 in South Bay

Getting half dollars into circulation is at best a stop gap measure for the FED.
If they could get all the surviving half dollars made since 1971 into circulation it would amount to a little less than one year's quarter production. It's also something of a logistical problem since some are in deep storage or "inconvenient" locations.
People aren't returning enough coin to banks and it's beginning to look like the problem goes beyond covid and even beyond the inflation that is reducing the value of the coins making their redemption more of a chore than a means to recapture the value of their money.
No doubt millions of coins are going into collections and many new collections were begun in the last couple years but it seems unlikely this could account for some 2 billion (1 1/2 years production) missing quarters.
Likely it's all three things converging along with the wealth effect of throwing money at everything and even the tax refunds for the average Joe. When those checks start getting spent I'd expect to see coins start walking into banks again.
I'll be surprised if this coin shortage lasts much longer. The mint has increased production and most banks are open again. The drop in cash transactions is continuing. In a year the only reminder for most people will be the odd half dollar in the change jar.
I'm seeing little if any reason to believe the old eagle reverse quarters are preferentially missing from circulation. There is a continuing drawdown on all the older dates in nice condition but there are far too few of these left to account for so many missing coins. The incidence of the older coins is pretty close to what is expected based on attrition and new production at about 32%. The percentage of culls is continuing to increase and is now up to about half.
I doubt collecting or the effects of collectors is much of a factor in this shortage. Unless they are hoarding states coins also their hand could be seen. The incidence of bicentennial quarters is continuing to increase so it seems improbable they are releasing these and saving states coins.
This shortage was probably made by covid and its effect on consumer behavior and banks.
The local convenience store I hit for gas every week had a youngish girl pay for gas with $20 in Ikes a couple of weeks ago. The cashier knows a little about coins, so he snagged them all......
For the past 2-+ years, I've been spending State Quarters, Presidential Dollars,
and Kennedy Halves, up and down Ventura Blvd. here in the SF Valley, and around Los Angeles. (and my travels)
When I would give a cashier a Kennedy Half Dollar:
About 20 years ago - I'd get "Gee, I haven't seen one of those around in along time"
About 15 years ago - I'd get a "What Is That?"
About 7-8 years ago - I get 'Who Is That?"
So, in about 20 years, the public has gone from 'haven't seen one in awhile, to Who is That?'
Paid 2.86 at COSTCO this morning. Can't use cash at the pump so I didn't get and Kennedy half dollars in change.

Lol. Not laughing about the gas prices, which really is a joke, I'm laughing about an ordinary 1994 Kennedy. '64, yeah? No? In Chicago, I pay $3.30 a gal.
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.US coins aren't even that worthless. Just look at the Turkish Lira which has fallen and continues to fall. The highest denominated coin is 1 turkish lira which has a value of 7 cents.
I was low on fuel. The Chevron station was my only option before heading into the wilderness for home. SoCal guy to SoCal guy.....I know you get it!.......it was in Riverside. The gas is way cheaper in the South Bay and Orange Co. I was coming home from the Rams game. I would have stopped to get gas downtown in Los Angeles but I value my life more than running low on gas. Us poor folks out in Dirt Valley are screwed!
Costco is an option........if you want to get in line and you have an extra hour or so to waste while you're waiting to fuel up.
$5.15? Not sure where you are at but we only got hiked up to $3.79 so far.
BOSTON (CBS) — Gas prices are going down in Massachusetts. The average price per gallon in the state dropped 2 cents from last week to $3.40, AAA said.
The state average is still 5 cents higher than the national average of $3.35 per gallon. AAA Says

I feel for you guys.
Take a drive to Dizzy Land and forget about it all.
Don't forget to pay in Half Dollars and tell them Fred said to do it.
Pete
Here in NYS, Catskill Mountain area, $3.35 a gallon .... Saw on the news, prices are supposed to fall in the next couple weeks. Have not seen a half dollar in change in a long time, but get quarters often. Cheers, RickO
The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant has recently purchased Dizzy Land annual passes for EVERYBODY! The Little Hydrants are so happy! I'm happy that they're happy!.....and the best part?......quiet weekends at home for me while everybody is at.....THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH!......Its a Win/Win!
Lucky me, I have 4 COSTCOs within 16 miles of my home, one 4 miles to the West, another 6 miles North, one 8 miles South and another about 14 miles East. Besides the cheap gas I can usually get free lunch at the sample stands or buy a $1.50 hot dog and drink push comes to shove. Am I a penny-pincher or what?
Pulled right up to one of the 18 pumps at 11:45 this morning, no waiting in line. In addition I get 4% cash back on my COSTCO Visa. Also want to point out that the pumps open around 7 AM if you are out and about at tat time of day and never a wait at that hour.

Got me to thinking, turns out I have 4 Costco's within 25 miles of me.............never been to one, but then I have 13 BJs stores within 25 miles of me, I guess that answers that.

There is a Costco gas station about 35 miles from my house. It's right next to the bank I go to. They must have about 58 thousand pumps there and the cars line up down the street, up the street, around the block, and off into the far horizon. It's INSANE! I need a tour guide to get into the bank parking lot. $5.15 a gallon looks cheap compared to that mess. NO THANKS!
But.......The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant has recently also became a COSTCO MEMBER!!!!!! she brought home some great tuna! And about 50 gazillion other cans of who knows what? But I like tuna......Can't wait for the credit card statement. 😵
Give it time. Our government is certainly trying to catch them in a hurry.
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
I think many people at the end of the day just toss change into a container and forget about it. There have to be two or there containers in my house with a few hundred dollars nobody thinks about.
$4.19/gal at Costco here in California. Fortunately I drive a Tesla. Still have to go get gas for the lawn equipment every so often. Get a lot of strange looks when I pull the Tesla up to the pump. Haven't got half dollar in change for years. I wonder how much money each year is pulled from circulation by collectors.
Yeah, this is pretty much the problem. Coins, especially quarters, used to circulate much more rapidly and might change hands several times before they get "stuck" in a change jar. Then people would remove quarters to pay tolls, make phone calls or do laundry. It used to be nice to have a few quarters in the pocket to operate a vending machine. But every year the quarter is worth less and less and is less useful in commerce except to make change. So coins go from the bank to a store to a change jar now and sit there until there's enough money to matter.
Essentially the nation's change jar is filling up more than in the past leaving too few coins for commerce. Maybe if they increased the value of money instead of eroding it there would be plenty of quarters. The first thing they could do to increase value and lower taxes is to get rid of the wasteful cent. It would make the change jars a lot lighter too since pennies still accumulate until you can't afford the co-pay for your new found hernia were you to attempt a bank run.
Going forward we just might hear more about the velocity not only of quarters but even the Dollar Itself.
I read somewhere a few years ago that a big storage facility was being built in Texas just to hold all the dollar coins that were never put into circulation. I'm I right?
The Lake Champlain ferries used to routinely give Kennedys as change. About ten years ago I got a 1972 and a 1973. Don't remember any mint marks.
... And pay for the facility using all of those dollar coins?
The dollar coins are already being stored somewhere.
I would wonder what benefit would come from a designated facility
Some congressman decided he wanted a new dollar store in his district...
Ba-dum Tshhh!
I have a love/hate thing for Costco. Love the products they sell but hate the free samples and the congestion they cause. People waiting in line like they never tried a tortilla chip. So aggravating.
Now we Instacart our Costco order. I do go there for gas however. Filled up last week for $3.29 a gallon. No waiting.

$2.83gal here. No Costco. No waiting in line Enjoy it while we can.
Gas prices are unnecessarily high, along with most everything else.
I knew it would happen.
AND......the price of gas was $5.15 a gallon!
wow!! I'm aggravated that I have to pay $3.10.
Well, there are a lot of new people added every year, but at least the Presidents have their name on them!
The store I was in today prices were up 20% pretty much across the board. Real price increases will hit one product after another but this affected every product. It probably will all go straight to the bottom line.
This was a grocery and not coincidentally I find myself buying more and more groceries at hardware store and other non-traditional venues. We buy gas at the grocery and ketchup at Menards.
It's a screwy world now days and it was sure lucky everyone started selling food right before the pandemic or we would have had to scour the grocery stores for hammers and caulk guns. It wouldda taken forever to find a 12 lb sledge hammer.
Only hard core oldtimers call it that
My Dad called it that. Dizzy Land is a way of life around here. Going there from the beginning. A little kid......Then date night in high school. Go there just to hang around. $5 to get in. Cheap. Then take the kids after marriage...... Now the grandkids. It truly is THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH.
We've called it that since the 60's, after going ape sh#t onthe teacup ride.
Do people talk about E-ticket rides anymore? People probably think it's an electronic ticket... 🤪
Cashiers, especially the young ones can't make change nowadays. Its pretty hilarious.
My father saved all his change in a jar and since he only used cashed and went every day to get coffee and food, same places, everyday, and yes I finally took it all to coin star and it took forever and was a big ordeal, I attracted lots if attention doing it will all the change pouring in - I thought it was going to be 1000s but actually it was like 850 dollars ...
