The burglars got away with thousands of dollars in rare coins from a St. Paul house, but they ran into trouble when they tried to put the money through a coin machine at a bank that happened to employ the victim, according to St. Paul police.
Employees at the BankCherokee Smith Avenue branch on the city’s West Side became suspicious Thursday afternoon when some teenage males wanted to exchange a sack of coins for paper money, but the coin-counting machine got jammed with rare silver dollars, said police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos.
Also, the teens tried this at a bank where an employee who lives on the West Side recently lost a large rare coin collection in a home burglary, Paulos said.
The bank called police, who arrested five 18-year-old St. Paul men at the bank.
Alex Grundei said the house he shares with his father, Steven, in the 100 block of Curtice Street was broken into Wednesday evening. He said the burglars ransacked the home, taking a television, a laptop computer, a rifle, a pistol and Steven Grundei’s rare coin collection, which included silver and gold pieces.
Alex Grundei said his father, who supervises maintenance for BankCherokee branches, informed the bank of the break-in Thursday morning. Police said the burglars showed up at the Smith Avenue branch about 12:30 p.m. that day.
Paulos said police have recovered the stolen rifle. But Alex Grundei said the bulk of his father’s coin collection, which he said might amount to “tens of thousands of dollars,” has not been recovered.
“We’re trying to call all of the gold and antique stores in the area,” Grundei said.

It is, Mr. Boston.
Their intelligence hasn't got any better since then, either.

Good took some off the streets for a bit, it can go two ways they get better at what they are doing or the stop and do the right thing from now on. Only time will tell hopefully they didn’t do to much damage to all the stuff they took.
Hoard the keys.
I'm thinking it should be "lack of common sense"

This happened eight years ago.... Is there further information? Or was it posted as a 'dumb crooks' post? It certainly qualifies for that.... Personally, I hope the punks are still in prison...though probably not. Cheers, RickO
