US Mint and its Hawaii Related Issues

DrDarrylDrDarryl Posts: 606 ✭✭✭✭✭

A quick numismatic research project of mine. There is a total of 29 US Mint issues with a specific Hawaii design element. It's an interesting fact that the US Mint manufactured these issues when Hawaii was either a Kingdom, Territory, or State. This would great thematic collection to acquire, as a complete set or as a type set (8 issues).

Let's see your US Mint Hawaii related issues!

Here is the "Nisei Solders of WWII" medal (3 in. and 1.5 in.)
From the US Mint website: "The 100th INF BN insignia features a taro leaf and a traditional Hawaiian helmet, both of which are emblematic of the unit's Hawaiian roots."

Nice... I do not have any Hawaii coins.. (well, I think I may have the State Quarter issue). That does sound like an interesting series to assemble. Cheers, RickO

This Hawaii Half is one of my favorite coins.

  • I put an 1883 Hawaii quarter in my Dansco 7070.... I was getting sick of all the Seated type, and I've been to Hawaii a few times so I thought "Why not?".

Well now I know why my Hawaii collection is going in the direction it is. Mega Red to the rescue. Just a little out of my budget but more issues than I realized.

@DrDarryl Given how much time you spend with Hawaiian pieces, do you now if collecting is popular among native Hawaiians? I'm curious about the interest from people of various backgrounds in Hawaii including native Hawaiisn, US mainlanders, Far East immigrants (primarily Japanese?), etc.

    Here's one of my favorites:

"1928" Hawaiian Half Dollar, off-center double struck - sculpted by Heidi Wastweet - issued by Mike Bozynski / Royal Oak Mint

I have a humuhumunukunukuapua'a coin from the royal mint. Never been able to find out much about it.

I have met up with collectors in Hawaii during my periodic vacations. There is a strong collector base and one's ethnicity is not a factor. I attended a few Hawaiian State Numismatic Associations (HSNA) coin shows. The active clubs in Hawaii include: HSNA, Honolulu Coin Club, and Big Island Coin Club.

There are Native Hawaiian artists entering the numismatic arena with limited edition issues that support sustainable agriculture in the islands. https://hawaiimintingauthority.com/

My Hawaiian interest stems from being born and raised in the islands (Oahu and the Big Island). My high school was next door to Pearl Harbor. My family home was next to a working sugar plantation. I had access to the artesian water springs and all the bananas, passion fruit, guava, and mangos one could eat. Then there is the seafood!

As I tell people, the next best thing to being in Hawaii is being immersed in Hawaiian numismatics.

I currently do not reside in Hawaii (on the US east coast).

I spent 6+ months in Lahina Maui. Worked at Longhi’s restaurant and worked for Willie K (singer/guitarist extraordinaire) Passed awhile back.
I shall share my Hawaii collection as I feel a strong connection. Thanks and I apologize for stretching this post. JZ

There is a small, but worthy numismatic exhibit relating to Hawaiian coinage at the Bishop Museum on Oahu. Worth checking out for those with plans to visit Paradise.

This was a historic companion piece for my King Kalakaua coinage collection. I had to share it for all eternity with those who visit or live in Hawaii, it now permanently resides in the 'Iolani Palace collection.
