My Morgan 91 P

coastaljerseyguycoastaljerseyguy Posts: 1,460 ✭✭✭✭✭

As there was a good discussion earlier in week by DelawareDoons sharing his nicely toned 91P, & with several posters questioning whether it was an AU vs MS coin due to the soft strike, I decided to dig out my Dansco and share my 91P, also with a close-up of the hair. Not as nice as the PCGS MS63 or as colorful, or pictures as good, but welcome all comments.

The coin would have to be seen in hand to determine if there was rub. The odd toning can be deceptive.

Need some straight-on pictures, not angled. Looks like it may have had tape across the obverse at one point... or something. Cheers, RickO

Neat! Tape toner or something? Kinda cool you cracked it for your album, my dansco one is kinda meh but I could never bring myself to crack an OGH.

PS: From that angle it looks better than a 2 today too.

Yeah, RickO's right about the tape. :)

Here's some straight on shots. I angled prior to reflect more of the color. All pictures taken in sunlight with an old P&S camera.

I'll fess up... when I was a kid and my grandfather gave me a handful of raw common date Morgan Dollars, I bought a Whitman folder and started adding coins to it. Of course, the Whitman folders were notorious for having coins pop out... so, my solution was Scotch Tape!

You are not the first. If I remember right I never bought a brand new album as a youngster, they were always used. I never used tape but saw many that were including used whitman albums with the blue pulled off by tape. It was a fairly normal event.

I struggled with this day for years.I had 5 from 62-64 never was happy with any of them.I ended up winning a 61pl on ebay with a low bid.61 morgans are usually terrible but this one was actually nice.I liked it better than any of my previous ones.I got lucky!

Do you think those old albums would have caused that reverse toning? Not sure I ever saw the old Whitmans. I was thinking some old coin box/cabinet with a colored felt/velvet backing that someone had taped the coins in to prevent the coins from moving around.

I'm pretty sure they do... at least mine did. The reverse had noticeably turned color from the time I put them in the album (when I was ~12 yo) and then re-discovered my childhood collection about 15 or so years later. I noticed the reverse toning because I also noticed a significant number of them had not nicely toned thumbprints on the obverse... go figure ...I was 12. ;-)

So the old Whitman's were 1 sided, i.e. the reverse side was closed and not viewable like the Dansco & LOC?

    Correct. They are foldable folders

My uncle had an old cedar box from a roadside Lil Abner venture in Kentucky. He kept a handful of silver and copper coins in it, never really looked at them individually, but they were all toned. Not sure whether the cedar wood did it or not, but all were toned, some had crescent toning. Never saw it after he passed.

Definitely MS with nice reverse color. The strike seems typical for the date.
