Unexpected Silver Dollar Hoard

Stacks Americana auction is one of my favorites..

This go around I had two that I really wanted and a bunch that I had my eye on, but wasn't too concerned about winning. I let a bunch of those go by since I was planning to spend a bit on one nice coin.
Got blown out of the water..
So there I was, a good bit under the tax threshold and hoping to scoop up enough cool stuff to come out on top!
The next category being bid on was dollars, so check out what I ended up with..😄

There were a lot of cool engraved dollars in that sale. I took a look through them this morning. Congrats on winning a few!

There's a place in my collection for them for sure... I'm more into potty dollars and am hoping to find the right seated liberty potty one of these days.
At first I wasn't that psyched on the above p dollar, but on further look I like it quite a bit.
The rest of my wins I'll show off once I actually have them in hand ✋

Nice pickups. I had the 1877 potty in my watch list but decided not to bid. Looks like that decision may have saved you a bit of $. or my bid may have been blown away. Didn’t see the hammer.

Unique pieces indeed.... Would love to have seen that first one... Would make a nice gift to a friend of mine - named Lora.... I remember going to coin shows in the PNW... If there were a potty dollar on display, that dealers table was always busy.... They were not common at shows, so always got a lot of attention. Cheers, RickO

Those were made for photos, not opium. The opium bit seems to have been a way to hype sales to collectors in more recent times.

Like 291fifth said. The box dollars were made to put a photo of a loved one inside. I own 2. One still has the photo inside. Curious @jayPem what box dollars are going for these days?

I do know what they were meant for actually, and I also know that the amount of opium you could squish into one of these ain't going to do a whole lot.. just happen to like the term opium dollar better than box.
Here's one with an inscription inside.

Currently I'd say 200 to 400 bucks?
For a trade dollar.
I've seen a bunch of Columbian halves and some foreign go cheaper. Other types will cost more no doubt.
I wasn't planning to get another TD opium but like I said, I like how worn the new one was and it went fairly cheap.

Thanks for adding. With the closed eyes have to wonder if that was a final photo of treasured child.
