1998 Mint Set Toners - What to do?

BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,771 ✭✭✭✭

Crew,

Not my cup of tea, but are the penny, nickel and dime worth playing with, as in sending in for grading?

If so, do you leave them in the packaging? I actually like the penny the most. Pictures don't capture the look as you see in hand.

Thanks

I’d leave them, as is. If you like them, keep and enjoy them, but if not, sell.

If I wanted to be an idiot, would I leave the coins in the mint packaging? I probably won't, but do they accept that and I assume I would have to grade them all?

Apples and oranges. Clad does not tone in the same way silver does. And that shade of purple and blue (especially when combined) is very sketchy at best.

I bought it that way for $10. I have no idea how they grade. I’ve seen so much variation that I buy what I like and hopefully I will learn on down the road 🤠

Different metal, strike type, and color. In fairness, the coin’s design is the same.

I'm skeptical of the color from what I see and would think it would go QC. Even if left in the packaging, that does not prove much since the coins can be altered without taking them out of the package (with gas or chemicals). You might get fortunate and see some straight grades, but the odds aren't in your favor (and it might be a pricey mistake with the grading fees).

Nothing is air-tight. A good doctor can AT coins in slabs...

That clad set toning is not normal or natural.

The next time you are baking a pie or cookies, include a tray with some modern BU coins just for kicks. You'll see all sorts of weird colors. I once baked some Sacagawea dollars just for kicks and the sides facing up turned all kinds of purple, blue, and pink.

Chemical or environmental exposure can also work magic on coins.

I think you should buy an album/albums and start a building a toned set/sets.

Sell them... far more value in the tarnish than in the coins....Might as well profit off of environmental damage when possible. Cheers, RickO

Great idea. Sell to the Facebook and Instagram crowd. Some of them love the AT look.

Not trying to threadjack, but under normal circumstances (nobody trying to play games, coins stored in normal household conditions) is the cellophane of the older mint sets safe? Meaning, no PVC or anything like that? I have a proof set run from 1995-present, and a mint set run from 2009-present. I was thinking about picking up pre-2009 mint sets, but the cellophane from 2007 and earlier gives me some concerns.

I have cellophane proof sets from the 1950s, cellophane proof and mint sets from the early 60s, and mint sets in cellophane from the late 1960s onward, and I have never had a problem.

    Why?

Because a lot of coins toned in those cellophane packs.

@BigDowgie Mr. Feld has given the best advice in this thread. Not a great deal of money to be made with these.

Just wanted to make sure the coins were safe in that cellophane. I'm not trying to cherry pick MS70's from old mint sets (I'm assuming that's already been done), it's just wanting to have a run of mint sets like I have a run of proof sets. If the cellophane is stable then I'm all good :). Thanks!
