Need an opinion on my 1800 dollar.

1946Hamm1946Hamm Posts: 783 ✭✭✭✭✭

I bought this dollar back in Aug 1998 from collectors.com and it was advertised as being 3% off center. The questions I have are. Would this be considered an off centered bust dollar and an error? Is there a population count of off center bust dollars? What are some of you error experts opinion of this coin? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Have a good day, Gary

3% isn't enough for anyone to care. It is largely irrelevant for such a coin and, in my opinion, more a detriment than an enhancement.

I don’t even believe it is considered off center since no design elements are missing. I believe yours would be misaligned dies or maybe broadstruck. That said it is a very wholesome bust dollar in a great grade in an increasingly popular early blue holder. You will have done fine price wise

That coin would do well with a CaC sticker, a nice dotted date 1800 should be about $6k-$7k hammer at an auction with some upside due to its look and freshness

Agree with with all above, having it put on the label will not give it a bump for the money and taking the chance of it going to a 40 I’d just keep it how it is.

There is no chance it would 40, not only is it choice for 45, PCGS doesn’t downgrade without a warranty payout unless you crack.

I was saying why take the chance when he doesn’t have to. It could get lost in the mail anything can happen. But it’s fine where it is.

So I won't ignore your op statement. I do not think the offset obv/rev has any bearing on the coin's value nor desireability as it is so minute. BUT I think the coin is VERY desireable as it is, in fact, it is a beautiful specimen and grade for a 220+ year old piece of numismatic history. Can't imagine the 20+ years you have owned this coin, that your value should have soared since 1998. Congrats on what I feel was a great investment choice.

BB-194/B-14 (Dotted Date), while not uncommon, is a popular die variety. Probably more interest in that than the off-center strike. Such strikes are not the norm but enough out there to not garner much specific interest or premium. (There's been a off-center with it on the tag - NGC I think - on eBay for quite some time with no takers.) People don't want to pay a premium for that. I'd go for a CAC sticker on it though. It is a nice one.
