Question about an off-center 1922-S Dollar

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,348 ✭✭✭✭✭

Have any of the error experts on here examined this piece in hand? It is a 1922-S Peace Dollar sold by Heritage in August.

It is a wonderful piece. All I am wondering is, which die was the hammer die, obverse or reverse?

Curiously, if you look at the 360 view spin-o-rama the edge does not show.

Thanks,

    @CaptHenway

You have forgotten more than I know, but it appears to me that the reverse die was the hammer die and the obverse die was the anvil die. I say this because of the collar marks on obverse as well as having the appearance of being slightly forced into the collar.

That was my thought, but I wanted an opinion from somebody who had handled the piece just to be sure.

Millions of years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, I saw a partial collar 1921 Peace Dollar that proved that the obverse was the hammer die on it, and a partial collar 1922 Peace Dollar that proved that reverse was the hammer die on it. I just wanted to confirm that at one branch mint the 1922 Peace dollars were struck with the reverse die as the hammer die, and that it wasn't something that only Philadelphia did.

    HMMM............

I never knew stuff like that happened. I always thought that there was a uniform method between Mints where almost everything procedure-wise (like die position) was done the same.

    News to me.

But unfortunately nowadays anything could be news to me.;)

I think that all of the 1922-PDS dollars were struck reverse side up, but the 1921 Peace dollars were not. Presumably the Mint did a lot of experimenting during the redesign process to see what would work best.

    That would figure, TD.

Especially with a new design and issue.

Sorry, can't help, but that's a phenomenal coin! Legit Peace dollar errors aren't so common and that one is a doozy.

I bought and sold this mint error twice.

Andy Lustig handled it as well.

I think that the reverse die was the hammer die.

I owned that nice 22-S once or twice myself -

And, as noted, the obv. die was the bottom
die - that's my memory, and it's confirmed,
I believe, in the photos of the collar marks
on the obv. sides at 6:30 and 11:30
