Gunsmoke

I was watching Gunsmoke today with Marshall Matt Dillon and there was a segment with a bad guy who was playing poker. He had just got a pair of 3’s up and made a bet…$20 St Gaudens! Sorry the photo isn’t better but you can see it….

With a pair of 3s???
Is that the episode where the bad guy kills his own brother and takes the coins he has hidden in the sugar jar?
Isn't that incorrect? It's supposed to be the 1870s.
2 more in the hole.
I thought Gunsmoke took place before 1907 when the Liberty double eagle was still in circulation.

What you don’t see are his hole cards…he had at least 3 of a kind.
You guys are being way too technical for this show! 😂
No way! James Arness wasn't even born yet.
My dad died last year at 96-2/3 years. Whenever I would visit we would watch Gunsmoke. I can’t help but watch it now and think of him. He also watched a ton of John Wayne movies….I sure miss chatting with him.
There is a 1974 "Gunsmoke" episode "Trail of Bloodshed" which shows some silver dollars and gold double eagles on a table.

Recently watched the Netflix show Turn: Washington’s Spies, cool series. Obviously it takes place during our Revolution. One early episode had contrails in the sky during one of the scenes.
Cointrails in the sky?
Whenever I see coin trails in the sky, I expect to see some change in the weather.
There are many period anomalies in TV shows.... coins, equipment, backdrops inadvertently filmed, etc.. Cheers, RickO
James Arness, what a badass. Great actor. I think I'll turn on Gunsmoke today and see what ol Festus is up to lol
Ounce by ounce the stack grows .
Festus.. sure had the sayin's! One that stuck with me was something like " why Matt you, he's crookeder'n a hound dog's hind leg ".....
Not all things in Gunsmoke made sense. Supposedly in Dodge City; but then there were episodes where there were mountains, mines, etc... so not surprised that some of the money or gold coins don't quite match up with the time period. But still a great show and brings back many memories.
When making movies, anything goes! including double eagles.
Joined a dinner with Ken Curtis (Festus) during a production of Paint Your Wagon. Everyone warned me not to call him "Festus". Said he would take my head off - actors are evidently sensitive about being typecast.
Cool thread!
Word of note;
James Arness' brother was Peter Graves!

Another famous actor. "Stalag 17" was one of his most famous movies.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Yet all he was in was westerns!
Tons of westerns. He was also a singer in his early career, Can't remember if he had a singing role in Paint Your Wagon. Roy Clark played Ben Rumson (also at dinner, a really super guy).
Ken didn't sound or talk at all like the Festus character. Perhaps that was the embarrassment.
He was also a singer in his early career,
