(43) IKE dollars

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,463 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've accumulated 43 IKE dollars over the years. Before I spend them, is there anything I should look for? None are silver.

Any of them in mint state grades are worth more than a dollar and worth a further look.

I gave my kids Ikes for tooth fairy dollars. My daughter didn't care, but both boys became coin collectors from it.

I have a couple hundred or so stashed in jars and tubes. Hoarded at the times of issue, and picked up over the decades at banks, stores, etc. I keep them as souvenirs of the last circulating large sized silver dollars.

From a reply that I made in another thread back in August:

    Regarding circulated Ikes:
    1) Clad Ikes have a melt value of < $1, so face is what you will get for circulated Ikes....except from an Ike collector wanting to search for varieties, or a old slot machine owner...IOW, the pool of buyers that would pay over face values is small.
    2) The exceptions to #1, for clad Ikes in circulated condition: a) 1972 Type 2 (and Type 3 to a lesser extent), b) 1971D Friendly Eagle, c) bicentennial Ikes might get your a couple of bucks , d) low ball Ikes in grades 1,2,3. In addition, there are a few varieties that Ike collectors might pay a premium for, like peg leg Ikes.
    3) Circulated silver Ikes have a melt of just over $7.50, and can garner a bit of a premium, because, well, silver.
    4) The exceptions to # 3, for silver Ike in circulated condition would be 1971S varieties - the FS-401 peg leg and FS-501 RPM. In addition, there are a few varieties (DIVa Ikes) that Ike collectors might pay a premium for.

In addition to the above, as @Namvet69 suggests, check out the DIVa (Designated Ike Varieties) listing on the Ike Group home page: https://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=28

I have a few hundred of them. My local coin guy will let me buy them for face value. He has a few thousand of them.

Well then he is losing money he paid a dollar for them when a dollar was worth more

I have a few that are graded and 40-50 in tubes. I don't really know why I keep them, other than the Ike $ is no longer minted. Also, I just like coin collecting. :)

I only buy ikes at shop for a 1.10 for one of my customers (and let him have em at cost) who likes em and sells them at flea market for 2 bucks, dont know how he does it, but he can sell as many I can get him. Whoever is paying 2 bucks for regular old ikes, is dumb IMO. Anyway, I always check for ty2 72's , once in a great while Ill get one and can get a few more bucks. 73's that were only in UNC sets, i used to pull, but really have no buyers anymore , so i just let my flea market guy have them too. 40% are diff, we buy them at percentage of melt, and sell them when i make a trip to refinery.

Intresting to note on the bicentennial Ikes, my flea market guy, says these are actually the hardest to sell of the clad dates, his ike buyers really dont like the 76's, and they are usually the last to go.
