Hi guys, I see the 1923p Peace Dollar has many varieties. My sights are set on the ""tail on O". Very nice premium. If not, maybe any Peace Dollar that has toning? I see on another thread how the tone Peace Dollars are bringing an extra premium. I'll post any hunted find, if interested? Thanks guys. :)

Oh yeah, I have NO Peace Dollars in my collection!

The 21 VAMs are most valuable - 3A is popular but1F and 1H (and 1G?) are made with proof dies.
The 22 is also full of top VAMs.
See if you can find a PL peace dollar - super rare! Most rainbow toning is artificial on peace dollars.

    My First!

Ok guys, Soon as you see my Peace Dollar, I KNOW what you guys will think! Lol.
Ehhh, How ugly! Sure, I get it. As a matter of fact, that's what I first thought too. But when examining the coin closer and seeing the grade, fattie slab and the hidden toning. I was sold. Poor thing, it needed a home and I decided to take her with me. Lol Oh yeah, no VAM. At least not the two I was checking for? Maybe later I'll find one on it? So anyway, I like the coin. That's all that counts. Check out my beauty! Thanks :D

    Love the Reverse

Yes the photos are much better, but sorry, to me the coin has negative eye appeal.

I can see how some would like it. Just don't expect everyone to.

Yeah Joey, photographing color is the most difficult photography to master. With that coin there's enough reason to try, try again. The coin is at best neutral toning but any peace dollar toning is an exception.

Go to Ikea and get ya 3 Jansjo led lamps. They're like $12 each. Obviously evenly space them from above and tilt the coin just a few degrees. GL.

Why, thank you, my friend. ;) I'll try to purchase those. If it means better photography. Very Cool. The toning on my newly acquired Peace Dollar is really awesome. However, the coin is much more appealing in hand, than on the internet. Despite the darkness. Got a pretty good deal as well. $70. Lol. Thanks again. :)

Price on that was about right.
Here's a photo of my set up. All of about $6. Plus the Jansjo's. I just drop my camera in the stand which holds everything steady, lighting from above, timer to 17 seconds and white balance set on a fairly basic camera.

    Good for E-Bay sales.

as BryceM sort of stated above, that's kind of an ugly coin and nothing you do to angle the lighting will improve it.

Slow down and be more selective when buying common date Peace Dollars.. Both the 1923 and 1924 have sub-standard eye-appeal. The dark spotting on the 1923 is very unattractive and the 1924 looks very washed out.

    All glory is fleeting.

You’re officially hooked now. Go for uncirculated ones - at least ones that have some luster!
That’s nice thing about peace dollars you can collect really nice ones but otherwise they are really just culls. Only the uncirculated ones have any real value except for maybe 2 or 3 dates, 21, 28 and maybe 34S and most dates are available UNC or AU at least. The biggest watch out is there is a lot of cleaned ones out there and they get hairlines very easily....
I keep most of mine ungraded -
I like your toned coin. I have a 28S like that

The 34-D has excessive marks for the grade. Sorry, but I am not liking your Peace Dollar purchases. Slow down and be more selective. They aren't rare or even scarce.

Ezest. Dipped for about 1 minute. I realized it was kinda beat up so I decided to dip it. I usually don't want to remove the toning. This time, an exception. It does look amazing. Besides the harsh rubbing on the left side of the obverse. Thanks.

There is a lot of mint mark diversity of 34d, the ones that matter are paired with the doubled Obv. You can still cherry a few Vam3s esp circulated but the Vam 4s dried up over a decade ago. I think they are underrated being redbook varieties that are the last naked eye double dies on the last silver dollar with actual naked eye variable Rev dies. Really the last of old school coin manufacturing with the Vam4 being not only legitimately scare but conditionally rare in UNC

All that said nobody collects peace vams

  • coastaljerseyguycoastaljerseyguy Posts: 1,460 ✭✭✭✭✭

1 minute is too long in EZest and probably removed some surface metal, even if you cannot see. Should be 50/50 solution and < 5 seconds at most, for stubborn haze. The rinse is also important. Hope it doesn't turn.

Thanks for all that info on the 34d VAM.
I was curious about my coin not having the doubling on the obverse but maintaining the mispositioning of the m.m. on the reverse. ;)

Both the VAM 3 and vam 4 Rev dies are known without the doubled Obv. It appears the error Obv die made a full run. After studying the coins it appears there are EDS non doubled large D (only semi filled) >>>> then the doubled Obv got added and a large run was made before the swapped out the large D die for the small d high die. Then cracks appeared on the Doubled Obv die and it was swapped out for a normal looking Obv and a large run of the small Ds non-doubled Obv were made.

Very nice. I’m thinking about one of these Intaglio 1 oz peace dollars. At $50 it seems a good deal I got 1 2021 from the mint.

$130 is a pretty good price I think. I heard some dealers asking $150 for these at the latest CSNS show.

I’d wait and get the 2oz peace

The diameter for the 1 oz is an odd size. 39mm is the standard 1 oz round diameter

The 2 ounce one is 39mm but thicker. There is an airtite product … X9D or something where D stands for Deep. I think they were originally made for the Queen’s beast 2 oz coins. There are airtites that are direct fit and ones with rings.

Lastly and most important, they charge a flat $6.xx or $8.zz something for shipping. Up goes the cost per oz.

Their waitlist signup feature does work if you choose to wait for the 2oz.
