Mint employees had a lot of unused sick time in 1969
.
.
And for every 220 unused days, they got 1 year added to their 'years of service'

In some districts it works the same for teachers. It allows them to retire several year early from the school system.
Overall the bottom-line is harmed when workers bring diseases to work. Praising that kind of poor hygiene is becoming a thing of the past. Work smarter, not harder...treat your lice before you go to summer camp kiddos!
The work ethic was a lot different then.

I’ve got about 1,600 hours of sick leave and 400 hours of annual leave, where is my medal!
.
I like my job so much, I only take about 2-3 weeks of my allowed 5 weeks vacation each year. Where is my medal!
I had 2,664 hours of accumulated sick leave when I retired from civil service in early 2016. It was accrued at 4 hours every two weeks during my career. The accumulated sick leave, which was well over a years worth, was added on to my pension calculation. I got all those guys listed above beat!
I know long time fed civilian employees that have over 3,000 hours of accumulated sick time.
There is a benefit towards years of service upon retirement, and my understanding is that many folks view it as an insurance policy, e.g., if I get really sick from something and out of work for a long time, I can still draw my full salary through use of sick time.
While that may seem outrageous to some folks, I know people who work for state govs who get substantially better sick time benefits at retirement.
Agree with @oih82w8 that work ethic is different nowadays...

I agree but In this case it could not be used for early retirement, but was added to years of service at retirement

At my last job, which I worked at for 20 years, I took my first sick day after 17.5 years at the job.... I just rarely get sick. Unfortunately, the company did not accrue time like the government does. Cheers, RickO
I think the joke at the end would get someone fired these days

Wow, I wish my company accrued sick time like that. It's great to see that hard work and dedication are rewarded.
I would have 370 days right now or about 2,960 hours and I still have just under 10 years to go before retirement. I rarely get sick and I've only taken 5 sick days in 37.5 years of working at the same place. Work ethic is not what it used to be.

This is not that unusual when working for the US government When I was in the military you could save up to 60 days max and take those days off all at one time. However, it took 2 years to get to the 60 days ( weekends and holidays were not excluded either). Also, you could save your leave and when you retired, you could sell it back or just retire at home up to 60 days early.

When I got out of the Army, I cashed in a bunch of unused leave, which was nice, because the money was very useful and needed at the time. I only ever used one sick day the entire time I was in the Army and that was to have an impacted wisdom tooth out with the expectation I would return to duty the next day. I remember the lieutenant shining a flashlight in my mouth before she'd let me go on sick call. Such were the rigors of the division JAG office, lol.
@AnnW Can you imagine how much sick leave we would have incurred if the military gave us sick leave by the hour like federal employees get. Working 7/24 it would have broke the the US treasury . The only sick leave I got in 22 years was with a doctors order after a surgery. THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE
