British East India Company mint at Canton, c. 1780-90?

In scattered publications, I've seen references to an effort by the East India Company to strike imitation Carlos III 8 Reales; apparently in the late 18th century, the British had established an informal mint at Canton to strike reproductions of the then-commonly accepted 1778-Mo 8 Reales, and by 1790, millions were supposedly circulating in China. Is this still commonly accepted as fact, are there any additional resources documenting this counterfeiting operation, and are any examples known today that are positively attributed to this source?
