1 is a Type of 1916 and the other is a type of 1917. Both came from the same seller.

Neither. The difference is a small design change.

The reason I ask, Ken, is that they both appear to be high relief specimens, which only the 16 and 17 had high relief versions.

Was this the design change David Lange mentioned in his book on Mercs years ago? I know the idea of different types never caught on but I can't remember the details now.....

I thought it was the pattern that looked like a 3 in the very first picture (to the left of where you marked in the third picture).
