ms70 Morgan/peace dollar tv coin show observations

PppPpp Posts: 517 ✭✭✭✭

Last night I was tv surfing and for giggles I saw one of those coin shows on tv promoting the 2021 Morgan and peace dollar ms70 sets for about $3,000. IMO what I consider is a true fact but somewhat misleading is when they promote the rarity of these 2021 coins.

They correctly state that the 2021 peace dollar is the lowest mintage peace dollar ever and the 2021 Morgan’s are the third lowest mintage Morgans ever.

A few of observations since the production gap is 100+years:
-from a rarity standpoint, a true comparison should be current 2021 mintage to the survival estimates of the original series. Example, 1921 peace dollar estimates 100,000 survival rate in all grades and only 5,000 coins ms65 or better. I would much rather have the 1921 ms65 peace dollar vs the 2021 ms70 peace dollar.
-also the mint today produces many ms70s. I don’t ever recall seeing an ms70 of the original series.
-the original series coins were used in circulation. I don’t think anyone will be using the 2021 coins for common commerce.

Personally, I just don’t think these types of promotions help the hobby.

I am sure over the years there have probably been many posts on these shows.

Yes... Those 'coin' shows have been ridiculed, castigated and otherwise panned here for years. I tried to watch one once... turned it off after ten minutes. Have known people who - being non-collectors - have purchased coins from those shows. They brought them to me to show their 'treasure'. When I broke the news to them (even showing them the Redbook), they became very angry...One guy never spoke to me again. Such a shame... Cheers, RickO

Its like anything else. If you’re an impulse buyer oh well. If not you might research. I have bought some very good deals from some of the TV guys. Caveat emptor. eBay can be just as dangerous and maybe even more so. 😉

I don’t mind the hustle but it saddens me their targets. The old lonely guy spending his twilight days sitting in his fav chair looking for something to pass on or thrill him once more. Some widgets are junkier than others. I have broken up so many plated state quarter sets from hairs telling them to roll them and deposit (butttttt they are gold and platinum :# , that’s why coin star doesn’t work!) that a nice Morgan set is the least of my worries.

What annoys me the most is the selling of bullion coins that are graded - I wish PCGS and NGC would STOP grading bullion coins and then this madness might be put into check.
They take monster boxes of silver ASEs and grade them - just horrible

It’s sad to see their realization they have been ripped big time by tv purchases when they trying sell it off the bourse at local show and getting 5-10c offers on $. This one dealer has this really loud guffaw and laughs really loud “you paid what for it?” Or “your an adult person right?” Then loud guffaw.

That’s not as bad as the statehood quarters. Many many people got the shaft on them. I would see people come into my friends shop with them only to here they are worth face value and crush those poor people’s harts. That was just wrong but if you or me would do that I bet we would be in jail.

    Hoard the keys.

That scheme lasted about six months.

I wish the ANA would have a public education program about these hucksters. It wouldn’t stop them, but it might turn away a few would-be victims.

I would say most people that get taken by those types are not really coin collectors... not on the level of collectors that know about the ANA at least.
