Carson City gold coin record price alert

The current record price for a Carson City gold coin at auction is for the 1876 cc $5 in MS66. This coin is pedigreed to Eliasberg, Battle Born, and Tom Bender. Per Doug Winter, this is the single finest gold coin from the Carson City mint. The record price was set in 2012, at the battle born collection action, were it realized $477,250.
However, there is an 1870 cc $20 currently up for auction at heritage, https://coins.ha.com/itm/liberty-double-eagles/double-eagles/1870-cc-20-au53-pcgs-variety-1-a-pcgs-8958-/a/1336-3699.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515, with a bid of $577,777 or $693,332.40 with the buyer’s premium, with one day to go. This coin represents the third finest example of the 1870 cc $20, and the second finest available, as the finest in AU58 was stolen in transport,
The example at auction was owned by Don Bentley, who was local to the Carson Valley (south of Carson City) for many years. With one day left, it will be interesting to see how much farther this coin can go. Perhaps it will be the first Carson City gold coin to break the $700,000 or $750,000 barrier. This had been a strong year for Carson City gold, and each 1870 cc $20 that has sold, has changed hands for strong money,

Thank you that is clear indication that significant cc gold is white hot.
I don’t have that coin in my collection….YET!
I like gold, and CC coins - in silver - were a focus until I completed the Morgan set. I will not get into CC gold though.... I have other priorities... I do like them though. Cheers, RickO
1884 cc is from the Battle Born collection.
1875 cc from the BST board.
I have a CC Gold coin from each of the 3 denominations. I will have to be content with that.
Perhaps our forum member actively building a set is being played again?
Possibly, but unlikely. I figured TDN is the high bidder, so that he can place it in the special quintuple of rare coins.
I started trying to collect CC seated Liberty silver dollars circa 1870s - if you hate time or money and have plenty of both to spare, please join me!
They are about like collecting hen’s teeth - except there are way more fake liberties around...
crazy! I should have stuck with the Morgan’s and Trade dollars ...
I have a set of CC seated liberty dollars. The hardest to find for me was the 1871.
Here is a bold statement: Several years ago , I had the privledge of looking at a complete set of raw $20 Gold in capitol frame holders , this collection missing only the 1854-o, 1856-o and 1927-D. At the time , the family had no intention of selling the coins, as they inherited so much money & property, the coins were literally secondary and had lots of sentimental attachment. if this ever comes to market, it will rival the current 1870-cc, this coin is at least as nice as the one being auctioned. Also, the 1921 Saint in this collection is right up there with finest of this date as well. this 21 is absolutely phenomenal. I have never herd from this family since, and have not herd that something of this magnitude ever surfaced yet??
There was an AU58 specimen that surfaces a few years ago, but it was stolen in transit to heritage auctions. It could have been the coin you mention, but it is likely we will never know.
I still need this coin for my $20 Liberty collection. The current bidding has passed me.
Now at 705,000 w/juice.
Sold for 1.625mm with the juice! Unreal!
I figured that it would go for $700,000 plus the juice. $1,620,000 all in is an amazing result.
You will all be pleased to know that I was the under, under, under bidder at an embarrassingly low number.
WOW!
Depending on the grade, there's many VF-XF CC gold coins that have doubled in the value over the past couple of years.
For the AU-53 that sold last night (with the benefit of hindsight), it sold in 2014 rather cheaply at $414,000. The same coin sold ten years earlier for $368,000 (in 2004).

If I only had a time machine! CC Gold is what are dreams made of.

I'm guessing this time it was Registry set mania driven as this is currently the highest PCGS graded example.
If it were not the sole top pop, I think your estimate or below would have been more likely.
That was a lot of moola. That is like nearly 5 1938-S dimes

It almost has to be registry set mania. Doug Winter wrote the following on this sale: https://raregoldcoins.com/blog/2021/11/12/an-1870-cc-2000-sells-for-162-million-
