A werid morgan dollar error Need help!

I puchased this mogran dollar last year. The date on this coin is very werid 188 than a damaged number. Look to me like a date punch error or die fill in. Does any one know what kind of error this is?

  • Here is a 1882 o date picture compare to this coin

  • It look to me like 1882 o, but the thickness and curvature of number 2 is different

Thanks for the clear photos! Usually, these types of threads offer limited pictures that make it challenging to provide a determination.

Agree that it's damaged. The 2 took a hit that displaced the metal.

At first sight I saw that it is probably damaged, but when I check closer there is no dent or damage at 2. Also the extra metal appear to be way larger than any dent can cause.

  • Even if its is caused by a dent, it is hard to explain the extra metal in the red circle

The 1 and the 8 seem too close together as well ... no?

If you look up 1882-O at Vamworld 2.0, Van Allen and Mallis have not noted a deformed 2 nor date spacing anomaly. Pmd that is old and worn down. IMO. Peace Roy

  • Here are more pictures. The red circle is where there appear to be a dip, but infact is just a black hit mark. With in the curve 2 there is no indent, but rather a rised metal line

The alloy is malleable, so when a coin suffers a hit, the metal can be moved. The raised area you see is displaced metal from the damage.
