Anyone seen anything like this before - 1850 Dime

keojkeoj Posts: 980 ✭✭✭

Working on dispositioning an old errors collection. Came across this...the holder is marked "1850 - Changed to States of America by South". Quite a curious coin. Whatever was done, was done a long time ago. Would a TPG slab this (countermark equivalent) ? Is it of any value?

Didn't know anyone in the South did such things to coins. Learn something everyday. Can it be documented who did it and when somehow?

Yeah, it’s some kind of ex-jewelry

It's ex-jewelry like a money clip or tie clip or cufflink. That's all it is.

Well whoever marked the holder had quite the imagination - :)

And the damage to the rim looks like where whatever was attached to the reverse was pried off.

Yep... former jewelry piece... clasp or pin removed.... Not a statement, just a functional alteration. Cheers, RickO
