1964 Medal D1964-1b Silver Nevada Statehood Centennial (Regular Strike)
When I first imaged this medal I thought.....shezz, could you clean it a little bit more?? ...jokes on me, as I looked closer and they are die polish lines. I was comparing this one to the trueviews .While this is an AU medal its still pretty nice. And, didn't know it was available as a proof.

A Fliteline medallion flown on Gemini 5 in 1965. This was the mission where the US finally overtook the USSR in space. The previous longest flight, 5 days, had been Vostok 6 flown solo by Valery Bykovsky in 1963. Aboard Gemini 5 were two Americans, Gordo Cooper and Pete Conrad, who flew for 8 days, hence the "8 days or bust" on the medallion. Eight days was considered the minimum amount of time to send a spacecraft to the Moon, land on it, and return to Earth, so the length of the Gemini 5 mission was determined to see if humans could survive that long in space. Needless to say, physical conditioning was important for the crew before the mission. After the flight the crew gave this medallion to their physical conditioning coach, Joe Garino, Jr.

I've attached two pictures in addition to the Fliteline. The first is of the launch of the flight, and the second is from the spacecraft looking down on Cape Canaveral, FL., Gemini 5's launch site.
