Suspicious PCGS coin listing on eBay

Batman23Batman23 Posts: 4,999 ✭✭✭✭✭

This listing seems off, something suspicious about it. A MS64 2020-W quarter in gold shield holder for $50. Seller has Zero feedback. The coin itself actually has a strike thru which I would guess is why someone went to the expense of holdering it in gold shield. Yet no where on the listing is there a mention of the strike thru. The PCGS cert number is not entered into the listing either. https://ebay.com/itm/133925566104?hash=item1f2e95f698:g:H2EAAOSwBDdhhS-j

I enter the cert number 41664518 in the PCGS cert lookup and PCGS comes back with an error. All around this listing seems problematic. Does PCGS remove cert lookup ability on stolen coins? What are your thoughts on this listing?

I guess in comparison the graded one is a great deal and a steal compared to this beat up raw version for $17,500. This must be a very rare coin! Who are these people?

This listing reminds me of some of these people who find a Philadelphia coin and ASSUME it's a no mintmark error coin worth $10's of $1,000's and wonder why no one is foaming at the mouth to get it. Other listings show this exact same coin in MS67 with shipping for under $25........LOL

Something fishy here. I put in the cert and it comes up just fine. PCGS value is $5. Cert number 41664518 is valid.
    bob :)
PS must have been a system glitch when you attempted the look up?

I can't see anything on PCGS cert lookup. I have just tried several different cert numbers and I get an error on each one. I wonder what happened.

    I also noted I mis-typed the mintmark. It is not a W, it is a P.

Is this not what they are talking about as a strike through?

It's part of the "blind bat" series of strike throughs.

Some people really have no clue.

They delve into things without at least a token of research.

Is their much value for the strike thru over and above the normal struck coin? Just curious, as their are so many errors/faulty workmanship showing up lately.

It's the fact its included in the series that makes this one desirable I think... Not sure it'll sell at that price but hey...

Seller is new to ebay and looks like they just got their order back from PCGS.
    Check their other listings. ;)

Looks like you might be right. An interesting list for a new seller. They can use some work on their listings and pricing. This does not look as suspicious as I had first thought. I still need to figure out why PCGS cert verification is not working for me.

The PCGS cert number is not entered into the listing either.

You won't find the cert number in any of my listings because it's one more step that I think adds absolutely no value, especially if I'm already showing a photo of the slab. Heck, for many of the various required item specifics you'll find I just write "see description" because I don't think anyone is searching on them, and it's that much more work and another opportunity to make an honest mistake that a buyer can use against me.

Some buyers like to check and see if there are photos available from PCGS by using the cert# to see.

The $50 is the opening bid, not a BIN. No mention of strike thru in the listing because the obviously new seller went by the label which does not recognized the error. Coin, with strike thru, is not worth much more than opening bid.

    Now if it was a W mint. . . . . .

The $17,500 coin is a W mint mark but overpriced by about $17,492.

They're welcome to type out the cert number that's shown in the photo of the slab

Sorry, Jeremy, I thought you meant that you did not allow the buyer to view the cert#. My bad. If it is on the photo of the slab then it is offered.
