I'm a bit disappointed things didn't work out. There was a lot of hope for him when he was traded for. He was a 3x pro bowl wr, arguably a top 5 wr at the time. Injuries played a big part in his diminish in Cleveland. I also don't think his down the field skills translated to this offense very well. The run first, dump off, short route offense is not his game. This is a guy who will make the most outstanding one hand grabs and then miss ones that should be no brainers.
For him I hope he finds a situation that fits him and he can revise his career. For all the "Stuff" the media gives him, he never really went off while he was in Cleveland. Frustrated at times yes but not a distraction. This divorce could have been a lot worse but he was very quiet on his way out.

I honestly haven't seen much of him the last few years. is he a shell of his former self, or has he still retained some of his former skill?

The guy can still play but he's missed a good portion of the last 3 years due to injuries.

he dropped way too many easy catches at critical times in the games he was involved in. is it surprising that his on-field time diminished and the throws to him fell off?? in my mind, there was a clear loss of confidence in his ability.

here is another not mentioned perspective --- in today's NFL, the QB isn't calling the plays. they come to him from either the booth or HC, then he can make a switch pre-snap depending on what he sees from the defense. the few plays posted by OB Sr. disregarded, it is entirely within the realm of probability that OBJ wasn't targeted because he wasn't the primary receiver in the play called, and that the primary receiver was open. also, as Mayfield went through his progression during any specific play, it is also possible/probable that OBJ just couldn't be seen or that he ran to a spot where he wasn't supposed to be.

passing plays in a game transpire in about three seconds and depend on the receivers being exactly where they are supposed to be so that the QB can quickly look there and throw the ball. there's more involved in all this than "Baker doesn't like me and won't throw the ball to me" chemistry BS.

Kudos to the Browns for manning up
    And showing him the door.

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just saw a stat that shows OBJ averaged 5.6 targets/game this season, with the Browns averaging 30 passes/game. if OBJ's targets are rounded up to 6/game and there are four other receivers on the field at any given time, what makes him feel he's been overlooked and cheated out of chances??

    Is Rod Tidwell available?

No doubt. It's been rumored he was in on the Kennedy assassination. He's very old and surprised he can still play.

not that i want him, but doesn't he sound like the perfect Patriots reclaimation project???

    the perfect Patriots reclaimation project

yeah, that's what everyone thought about Josh Gordon. how'd that work out??

here's my take, arrived at during his Browns tenure --- OBJ was always an average receiver who's primary skill was speed and the supposed ability to make spectacular catches. the speed was real and allowed him some separation, the ability to catch was mostly a myth based on the one-handed film reel catch. once the injuries started to pile up he lost his one advantage, separation speed, and he became quite ordinary while displaying an ability to lose focus and drop passes.

    it's all there on film.

Josh Gordon was great until the inevitable drug situation came up.

I’d take a chance with OBJ 100%. If he acts up once then he is gone, no second chances.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,213 ✭✭✭✭✭

Gordon was OK. I noticed that the last season (I mean few games) he was in NE, the speed was lacking. He just looked like he was playing slow. I think that is part of the reason he has been pretty invisible on KC so far. no seperation.

Moss was a great reclamation project. best ever in my book

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • Steven59Steven59 Posts: 8,639 ✭✭✭✭✭

Didn't KC pick up Gordon recently??? Whatever happened to that - haven't read anything about it lately.
And there have been rumors for awhile Beckham never really wanted to come to Cleveland. I would agree with that as if he really wanted to be a Cleveland Brown he would still be a Cleveland Brown and nobody would be talking about his departure.

And there have been rumors for awhile Beckham never really wanted to come to Cleveland.

that's "sour grapes" from his camp trying to help him get out, he seemed pretty excited to get here. two things come to mind: it's gotta be the goin' and not the gettin' there that's good --- and --- every where we go, we take ourselves with us. OBJ left a bad scene in New York and guess what, the train-wreck just left the station in Cleveland.

not much has changed with him.

Poetic Justice would be The Detroit Lions picking him up. even more Poetic would be OBJ sitting on the couch with Kyle and watching the rest of the season.

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

Geez, I wonder what OBJ's doing today, because Baker Mayfield is having fun and spreading it around the WR's!!??!! I guess this answers the question and I hope OB Sr. is watching. :D

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

oh boy, now Odell can start to get nervous since he cleared waivers. the next 24hrs. will be the hardest for a prima donna like him to endure. if he makes it to Thursday without signing the likelihood of OBJ sitting for the season starts to increase rapidly. he might have to wait for an injury and desperation when the real play-off runs begin.

one thought: with the way the NFL operates in 2021 I doubt that any of the top tier QB's aren't involved in a decision.

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,581 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hopefully the Pats have enough sense to pick him up.

He will be on his best behavior and do his best to prove it was the Browns fault not his lol

  • BrickBrick Posts: 4,981 ✭✭✭✭✭

Also he knows the Browns playbook and maybe some inside information that would help the Pats. They could sign him tomorrow then release him Monday. ;)

there is plenty of film for The Patriots to study, they'll learn more that way than they will from OBJ. to be sure, he probably just knows the plays that are designed to go to him. :D

Given Beckham’s flashy image, I didn’t think that Cleveland would be a happy place for him. He craves publicity, and you won’t get it Cleveland.

Beckham has been a colossal disappointment over the last few years but he was absolutely a gamebreaking beast his first three seasons in New York, compiling over 4.000 yards receiving, 35 TDs and averaging nearly 100 yards receiving per game (he also threw for 2 more TDs in 2016).

It seemed like things went down hill for him after he broke his leg and missed most of the season while he was New York.

Looks like he chose to sign with the Rams. Matt Stafford's gotta be ecstatic to add another legit WR to that offense.

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

so the Rams cut Desean Jackson, who thought he wasn't getting enough "targets", and nine days later sign OBJ?? there's something about that not making sense to me.

And Desean is a boom or bust player.

I remember in my fantasy football days he would be that guy that goes 5 for 110 and 2 tds then disappears for 3 or for 4 games

i am not sure what to expect out of OBJ. I don't know how much he has left.

Agreed. But no doubt Stafford is also a better QB than Mayfield in getting the ball downfield.

It might make sense to you if you had a "Secret Inside Source." Good move by the Rams.
