1984 Olympic $1 impulse buy

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭

Several years ago I was browsing through a local B&M and noticed this coin. Modern silver commemoratives are not per se a series I collect. Yet when I saw this I had to buy it. The images are by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job. I'm including two images of the obverse as it can look quite different depending on how you tilt it.

Love it! There are some really nice toned examples out there!

This is one of those modern commems that you can find with nice toning (still not often but more than most others). You found a cool example!

Pretty sure you won't get the FH designation if you have this slabbed 😜

I never liked the decapitated torso design. Great toning though.

I'm not a huge fan of toning but those are nearly poster worthy and very attractive. The torsos are modeled after a water polo player and a female track and field athlete with a bit more pectoral prominence than usually seen...

The difference between the two pictures, lighting/position induced, is dramatic. Further evidence of why judging coins from pictures can be very difficult. Cheers, RickO

Cool toning. About the design, I like the Art Deco look. They did a good job of capturing the design on the coin. Here’s a pic of the actual thing

I remember reading about who the models for the sculptures were many years back but don't recall their names. Do you know who they were? How did they do during the Olympics?

They were neck-and-neck with the other competitors.

Such a fantastic piece. A few years ago, I discovered one that toned golden and PCGS slabbed it.

I have been looking at all the silver modern commemoratives lately. There’s some that have pretty cool designs and at $25-40 slabbed, not a bad deal. Thinking about doing a run of all the issues with eagles. 2008 Bald Eagle is my first. Love it. Anything to get away from ase’s or the new Morgan’s and peace dollars.

Ms. Inniss (now Inniss-Stevens) did not medal at the 1980 Moscow games & could find no record of her performance at the 84 Los Angeles games. Schroeder was a member of the LA silver-winning team.

That reverse is one of my all-time favorite eagles. Even more than the peace dollar or walking liberty half!
