Starting a franchise, who would you draft number 1: Brady or LT?

craig44craig44 Posts: 11,213 ✭✭✭✭✭

the discussion of a couple of weeks ago about who was the greatest defensive player of all time came to a pretty decisive decision. Lawrence Taylor.

follow up question: If you are general manager of a new franchise and have the number 1 pick, do you choose the greatest offensive player of all time or the greatest defensive player of all time.

you all know who I choose, who do you?

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

    Brady!

Taylor played 13 seasons and the last 3 were in steep decline.
Brady has now played in 21 seasons (which includes rookie season he hardly played and the 2008 season where he got hurt the first game) So 19 actual seasons and he seems to be getting better.

Brady is tremendous. Not getting better though. He has probably the most weapons he's ever had to throw to. That last part of his career with the PATS he was not looking so great without the offensive weapons.

I choose Brady as well, but I can advocate for the devil.

Has anyone disrupted a football game more than LT? he could blow up both the running and passing game.

I also believe he is the only defensive player to win MVP of the league. 3 time defensive player of the year as well.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

LT, definitely. Drafting a QB first - even Brady - is a mistake. First, make sure your team has a quality offensive line, THEN get the QB. Had the Texans drafted Tom Brady instead of David Carr (pretend they were in the same draft) you'd know as much about Tom Brady today as you know about David Carr. Carr was a fine QB, maybe even a great one, but he took such a beating his career was over after five years. Drafting Tom Brady without first assembling an at least very good offensive line is like buying a Rolls Royce and parking it on the street with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition. You might get lucky, but it's a foolish thing to do.

This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

I would have bet every dollar I have that you would chose LT. But I’d also bet the same on you being in the 1% of the people who would also chose LT over Brady.

I think I would build around the Defense, so I'd take LT at the beginning of a franchise.

    Brady no doubt.

LT was amazing and a game changer when you played against him. I think that if you did a poll asking which any two players, you could build a franchise with I think Brady or Montana, and LT would be at the top of the poll for most mentioned players.

Just to be clear, this is no knock on Brady (who I compared to a Rolls Royce). I would pick LT over Ken Anderson, too. But that's with my first pick, not knowing who anyone else on the team will be. I stand by what I said - picking a QB without knowing that you can protect him is foolish.

But, given circumstances other than drafting a team from scratch, I could go either way with Brady and LT. If I've already got a quality O line and a QB who isn't very good, then the upgrade to Brady would be hard to pass up. LT's value is more or less constant - he brings what he brings and he brings it whether his teammates suck or if they're good. Brady's - or any QB's - value can vary a great deal depending on his teammates.

I get your point and I didn’t think you were crapping on Brady, I mean LT is LT

In today's NFL, the most important positions are QB, blindside offensive tackle, edge rusher , and corner back. Corner back is a tougher sell as a number one pick, but the other three are justifiable. Linebacker is not important enough to typically justify a number one pick. Obviously if someone is the greatest ever, it is justified. Still, I pick Brady.

Brady would be my choice as he is 44 and still playing great.
The way he's going you might get 5 more good seasons out of him.
LT is 62 and has been retired from football for a long time. HIghly doubt he could help out even the Chiefs defense.

They say crack takes around forty years of your life. Therefore, LT is 22 - tops.
