Nuance’s of the Plus designation?

Trying to a handle on the nuance’s the the NGC “+” and PCGS “+” designations.
I understand that they are applied to certain coins that are at the higher end of the assigned grade.
What I’ve been noticing at auctions this year, that coins graded at AU-58+ are bringing stronger prices as compared with other “+” grades.
The MS-62+ and up do have higher prices as compared with non + counterparts,
but the spread is much narrower than the AU-58 to AU-58+.
I have seen a few lower graded + grades, 45 to 53, again the spread is much closer.
It seems the AU-58+ is the king of the plus grades.
Could someone explain why?

58+ is the highest possible grade allowed in “Everyman” registry sets.
For 58+, you are paying for registry set inclusion. Logically, then, if pop is greater than 1 you’re likely overpaying for the actual quality of the coin. Imo.
Buying and Selling coins for 54 years, 700+ shows in last 20 years, and boy am I tired.

It is - in this case - all about the competition... Points in the sets. Cheers, RickO
I think you should not have an apostrophe in the word nuances
You see that everywhere now, the possessive used as the plural. I even noticed it on a billboard advertising a medical practice.

Now listen boy, I'm tryin' to teach you sumthin' . . . . that ain't no optical illusion, it only looks like an optical illusion.

I've never had any interest in competitive collecting, but I do consider the registry system one of the most brilliant marketing strategies ever seen in numismatics. The TPGs operating registries immediately created a sizeable increase in demand for their services, and also a boost in the price of coins needed to "compete".

It is an interesting conversation to say the least regarding the everyman sets and prompted me to look back on a very recent sale I made (yesterday in fact) of a PCGS AU58+ CAC with Pop 2 coin that has a guide value of $260. I sold it for a mere $350 on feebay and now the coin resides in the TOP everyman registry for the particular series, even before it's been delivered (knock on wood). To be honest, I hadn't thought to take the time to deep-dive research the potential competitiveness of the particular coin but did realize it was worth more than guide due to its + and CAC status. Now after looking at this thread and really looking at the standings, I see with this latest update the set in question has a rating only .06 higher than the number two set, so I suspect this coin has bumped the other set out of the top spot! I was happy with the price when I sold it and I'm sure the new owner was very happy! I can only wonder what the ability to overtake a competitor in such a set could have been worth with the appropriate prescience! I'll certainly be more mindful in the future...
Sloppy and incorrect. We can do better...
When you're so caught up on being a Grammer Nazi you forget to finish with a period. LoooooooooooL
Ounce by ounce the stack grows .
The word’s “grammar”, not “Grammer” and a comma should have been included after “Nazi”.😉

. There, I didn't miss my period after all. It was just really late.
It seems to me that the 58+ coins are often time AU63s. Mint state coins in all characteristics but the grade believes there is slight “cabinet rub” on the high points. It wouldn’t be surprising to see such coins end up in 62-63 holders later on.
Funny - this is not my take on the + coins at all when they were started years ago. It was not so much about competition in everyman sets as it was about log jammed top sets that would not budge because the best coins were in those sets and no one could fined "better" coins so PCGS wanted to make more competition so the Plus came along . In fact, the reason for the everyman sets was because folks could never afford to compete in the regular sets so everyman sets were created. And if I recall (?) that + added to AU 58 was not even allowed when plus grading was started. That was requested by collectors afterwards. Maybe someone could dig up the old plus announcements or discussions to see if I am correct or not.
