PSA Grading Decision - Mac Jones

I have a 2021 Leaf Trinity Mac Jones 9/10 Nike Swoosh and Signature. The card to me is brilliant. One of the best I've seen.
I didn't know if I should have just flipped it or have it graded.
Well, I chose to have it graded. And it came back far less than expected.
The card is gorgeous. I'm not sure why it was graded lower.
The corners are sharp. The card has no marks. The sides are clean, centered, etc.

So does it matter that the grade is lower, but yet certified and authenticated by PSA/DNA.
or break it open and sell raw.

    What grades did it get?

It’s a secret because that’s not relevant to the question. 😉.

What’s the grade if you want opinions?

PSA 5? Thumbnail indention while opening the pack on the back of the card? Up a little & to the right of Mac’s helmet?

Still a solid card. Considering it’s a low grade and would most likely not net a ton of cash, it would be worth the risk to hold to see if he pans out. With his pedigree and current major market team, it’s a definite hold for me.

One thing it has going for it is that Alabama uniforms look normal on Leaf & Panini products w the lack of helmet logos.

It is 9 of 10 , I see no real sense in keeping it graded. There is only 9 others. Ungraded will sell on scarcity and eye appeal. Just my opinion.

If its an authentic autograph from a card company and it clearly states that on the back why do you need to pay for psa to authenticate something that us already authenticated. If you want to have the card slabbed/graded ok but don’t see the need for the auto cert.

I don't know the grade, but since the OP seems unhappy let's imagine for a minute that the card is currently a PSA 6.

My question is if you do break it open and sell it raw will you disclose to the buyer that the card has already made a trip to California and used to reside in a PSA 6 holder?

Your answer, if I get one, (and if it's honest) will tell me all I need to know about you.

If you are unhappy, crack it. Life is too short.

    It’s a good looking card.
Why not leave it as is?

Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards
  • well I thought it was a very good looking card and it received a 6.

I don't see: "Thumbnail indention while opening the pack on the back of the card? Up a little & to the right of Mac’s helmet?"
It was taken out of a very nice box, no pack. Leaf Trinity come 5 cards per box in a nice clear holder. I have video with it being removed. Never a thumb on it.

"It is 9 of 10 , I see no real sense in keeping it graded. There is only 9 others. Ungraded will sell on scarcity and eye appeal. Just my opinion."
That was my original gut thought, and wished I didn't send to PSA.
The market is already predicting Mac Jones cards to be the next Herbert.

If I did break it open and sell raw, I would tell the purchaser.
But I also am thinking of having regraded at some time. Beckett possibly.
Ever sense the meltdown at PSA with not being able to grade for over a year+, the hiring and quick ramp ups, I've seen variation and inconsistencies. But I felt this card was one a low hanging fruit grader card at a PSA 8 or better.

  • And I do keep the cards for teams I personally follow-up/love. But I participate in many breaks for high end cards. Right now National Treasures, Immaculate, Trinity, etc. I also have purchased a few of each myself (holding the boxes now, but really want to open them now :) .
So those cards I don't wish to keep are investments. And with Herberts 2020 National Treasures card going for $248k (I realize that is a extremely nice card).

I just want a little bit of that gravy train.

  • It's hard to take good representative pictures.
I've never had one of these thick cards graded, and it appears PSA wrap the card inside the slab with a plastic sleeve/cover?
I'll try to get some better pictures.

I usually like Leaf Trinity but this year the QC was not as good as previous years. I usually could pull 10s on the best patch cards. I would avoid buying this product.

Better yet, if you have a 3 in 1 printer, place the card on the glass and scan it. It’s a great way to share with others AND can be used to really scrutinize a card yourself.

    Good luck

No offense here, but if you are new to grading, and you saw something on the card and expected a PSA 8, then a 6 isn't bad. Typically, new graders very much overgrade their first submissions. In fact, if you assumed an 8 and it came back a 6, you are one of the more realistic first time graders.

check the boundary of the patch area...oftentimes there is a "dent" in one of the corners...

  • I have ~225 PSA graded cards. 185 of that I had graded.
So I've read many good posts on what to look for and how to submit for success.
I looked at this card under magnification. Saw nothing.
So when I say 8, that was considering that it would never go below and assumed PSA would short change it as a 9.

Thanx for the input, I'll keep looking. :) This is my first thick card however and I didn't know that PSA puts a sleeve on it inside the slab. Hard to take pics, reflection, etc. Why did they do that?

Is there anything going on with surface to the left of "MAC" on the back?

  • BatpigBatpig Posts: 460 ✭✭✭

A 6 on an otherwise nice card is very frequently a dent or indentation of some kind on the back. It may be very hard to see unless light hits it just right.

I was traveling for business and couldn't respond till now.

I thought the same, it appears to be something on the case/sleeve they put it in.

  • I think I've found the one defect, which sucks as it would have had to come out of the box with it? I saw the card go from Leaf box to holder.
Didn't someone here say Leaf's quality has really gone down hill.
It really looks like the plastic wrapper PSA put the card in, why do they do that on some but not all thick cards?
Outside of this, the card is flawless in my opinion, ugh.
