Will an opened US Mint box for First Strike still qualify

My D/S Morgans came I today. However, the box managed to get opened here at home. Would it still qualify for First Strike PCGS grading since it still meets the timeframe requirement? Or is the opened box a disqualifier?

I never understood how it would qualify either way - they sent them all at once - how would anyone know at what point it was struck?
And how would opening the box even matter??

Yes, up to the first strike cutoff date

I believe it will still qualify as it is within the window. The sealed box and date stamp comes into play if after the window.

They are ALL shipped within the same window - are they ALL First Strikes?
With all due respect I never understood the value in this. When I was coming up we called a cameo an early strike and you didn’t need a label to call it out...!!

It’s pretty much saying “FIRST!!!” When getting it graded. It becomes a label thing because really all of the Morgans sold out the first day and they are all being shipped this week.

There are only a couple of rare cases this has happened. It is exceptional.

The first strike panache can only be compared to such things like cars and money with low serial numbers.

On issues where the cut off date has passed, can’t you also send in your mint invoice as long as the invoice date is before the cutoff date?

    No.

The box must be sealed and shipped from the mint before the cutoff date

if within 30 day deadline do not send opened box. send only the coin in its unopened capsule. PCGS will carefully remove it for encapsulation and grading.

Repetition of ignorance is ignorance raised to the power two.

Any word if PCGS is going to designate PL or DMPL on the Morgans? My Denver’s are all mirror proof like and SF are all satin/normal. All have no imperfections.

Packing slip inside the sealed box will tell PCGS when the mint shipped the coin.

If you 're NOT sending an unopened mint sealed box, then your submission package MUST be postmarked by the cut-off date, so far that cut-ff date has not been posted

Let me try to break this down for everyone.

This is how I understand the First Strike (FS) cutoff: The coin needs to be shipped/postmarked to PCGS within 30 days of the first reported shipping or being made available to the public at a coin show. PCGS usually post the cutoff date a week or so after they start shipping (or date of the coin show that you could buy them from the mint).

    Scenarios/Exceptions:

1 - If the coin hasn't been issued previously, in a set or otherwise, just the coin can be sent to PCGS and get the FS designation, as long as it is shipped/postmarked within the FS cutoff
2 - If the coin has been released previously, but in a different format like a set, the coin MUST be mailed to PCGS in the original sealed US Mint shipping box and have a ship date/postmark PRIOR to the FS cutoff
3 - If the coin is issued in a set and there is a coin in the set that was issued previously, the ENTIRE set MUST be mailed into PCGS in the original sealed US Mint shipping box and have a ship date/postmark prior to the FS cutoff to get a special set designation and or the FS designation
4 - If the coin or set was shipped from the US Mint prior to the FS cutoff, and the FS cutoff has passed, the sealed US Mint shipping box must be mailed to PCGS. You can then get FS or a special set designation if applicable.

I think that's right... Am I missing anything?

JMO - I consider this to be marketing hype and fodder for the inexperienced buyers/collectors.... Again, JMO... Cheers, RickO

Does that mean if I want the 2 ASE from the Limited Edition 2021 Silver Proof Set with the "limited edition" label, I would have to send the whole set and also get the other 4 coins graded?

I asked PCGS if I can send just the 2 ASE for "first strike" and they said Yes. I forgot to ask about the "limited edition" label.

Yes - for that you would have to send the entire set in, sealed since both ASEs have been issued separately. Or, you could take the sealed set to a coin show and I think they would allow you to show them the FS cutoff sealed box and just get the ASE's graded.

PCGS would then verify the box, open the box, and remove the coins and return the remaining OGP to the submitter.

I usually do this at Baltimore, I only pay return shipping/insurance, have a verified submission form, and have peace of mind during transit. I can also feel confident that my weird requests/instructions are understood.
