Jefferson Nickel Rotation obv/rev question?

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,174 ✭✭✭✭✭

This 1940 Jefferson Nickel has a minor rotation, about 5% I would guess. I have several in my collection that have a small amount of rotation obv/rev, but trying to get a handle on how to access the estimate. I know this small feature adds nothing to value, but just curious as how to determine rotation percentage at a glance without a compass.
Thanks,
Jim

I printed one of these out then overlaid it with clear packing tape to make it durable so I can carry it in my wallet. I don't know if it could help with a slabbed coin though???

Well, it depends upon how good you are with spatial perception. Many people can look at a whole pie and imagine it being cut into six equal pieces. That gives you a 60 degree angle. Likewise most people can perceive a circle divided into eight equal pieces. That gives you a 45 degree angle.

Picture that wheel of eight spokes overlapping the coin you are studying, and reckon what fraction of that 45 degrees the die is turned. A third? 15 degrees. A bit less? 10.

Thank you Steven. Is it alright if I copy this and save it with a transparent background and print it on a cellophane page with all the different coin sizes? Would make it easier on a slab.
If ok, this is exactly what I needed.

I would also have a piece of the transparent film to use as a straight edge

Just a slight rotation... I would say (just visual estimate) between 5 and 10 degrees. Cheers, RickO
