I would disagree that he is liable. When the option of insurance was denied, the package was sent with tracking and was scanned as delivered. He did his part. It's no different than a UPS, FedEx or Amazon package being stolen of a porch.
Wrong. You buy insurance to protect yourself, whether you're selling or doing someone a "favor". You don't give anyone the option of not buying insurance. It's not that expensive. You can insure a package for $600 for less than six bucks. Never cut corners when dealing with USPS.
I'm surely not the only one wondering if @MisterTim1962 is an alt too afraid to post these opinions under his real ID, or rather wondering whose alt he is.

Keep in mind this is a group sub where I am doing this as a service to my fellow collectors. I have initiated the lost package searchh and also called the post office myself and spoke to the postmaster. They saidwith it showing delivered, an insurance claim will be denied. This is more than likely a stolen package in which the intended recipient would need to file a police report. Think of it as a package on your doorstep that has been delivered and someone takes it.
agreed -- wondering why a police report hasn't been filed yet?
I know everyone is busy but we really have heard little from Michael on this so are we just throwing our hands in the air and saying sucks to be us and move on? It's really going to be hard to file a police report 45 days later! Early on I was told the Postmaster was going to watch the video from that day? Did that ever happen?
The moral of this story, sadly, is not to volunteer to save fellow collectors (at least those with whom you don't already have an established friendship) a few dollars on postage and just submit your own cards to PSA or to the group submitter directly so that you're not to blame should something go awry. Just an unfortunate situation all around.

At the very least, you should have gotten signature confirmation, since these cards are worth a good chunk of change. Then you could demand they show you the form that was allegedly signed by Mike. Without SC, they will swear they put it in the right box and swear that all their employees are honest and would never steal any package.
Bottom line, without signature confirmation, the post office will continue to claim it was delivered and not stolen or misplaced by one of their workers. You could file a police report, but it would be a hard sell. Sorry this happened to you guys.
I just recently went through an issue with a package that was sent signature required. The USPS screwed it up any which way.
Apparently this was a substitute carrier on this day, I later found out. First mistake, they didn't come to my door, they went to my neighbors door. We have the same house number and street number too, but the street names are different (Drive vs place). Why this is even possible to do is beyond me , but that is another story.
I go to the PO pick it up, since my neighbor got the pick-up/redelivery slip. The guy behind the counter can't find it after about 10 minutes in the back! He sends me to the postal annex.
The annex takes my name/number and says they'll look into it. In the meantime, I end up catching my regular carrier a few days later. He thinks they misfiled it. I go back to the PO and try again, same guy. He still can't find it after another 10 minute search.
I never hear back from the annex. The pick-up slip has a return to sender warning if the package is not picked up by a certain date. I wait until that date passes and the tracking still has never updated. This is about 2 weeks after the initial delivery attempt was made.
Armed with a photo of the envelope, the slip and my tracking details, I go back to the PO for the third time. Same F'ing guy walks up to help. This time I hand him the stuff and tell him my carrier thinks it may be misfiled. He comes back in about 2 minutes with the package! It was misfiled. My house number ends in 27 and the sub carrier wrong 23!
I guess this doesn't necessariiy mean you should never use signature confirmation, but in my case, if the guy had not, my neighbor would have gotten the package on day 1 and i would have had it that same day (this mis delivery seems to happen a bit with out mail).
Regarding the comment about insurance and letting a buyer choose, isn't the sender responsible regardless? I do not believe an insurance claim can be filed by the recipient anyway, so in effect, the buyer may pay for it, but that should get them a refund from the sender. The sender then needs to do battle with the PO.
That last paragraph is incorrect at least as far as private collectibles insurance policies are concerned. Your collectibles are covered under the terms of your policy both to and from your destination as long as they shipped with signature confirmation (up to $2500 for USPS Priority and up to $60,000 for USPS Express). The claim would be filed by the policy holder (recipient) in this case.
You are correct if you are referring to USPS POSTAL insurance. However, I never buy insurance from the USPS as I am covered under my collectibles policy and my understanding is that USPS is not exactly easy to work with in the event you need to file a claim.
I seem to recall trying to file a claim with the USPS years ago and getting the run around. I don't recall specifics, but I do remember thinking I won't ever bother with that again. I figure they are not going to take responsibility for anything.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

No, Im here. I don't come on here to often as most of you know that my place has burnt down and finally received the report that the county approved to rebuild again so have been rebuilding my bridge to my property. My town is a very small town with only 4 ladies working at the post office thats including the Postmaster. I personally know 3 of them and they just hired the fourth one around the time the package came. I know the ladies tried to do everything possible to rectify the situation by actually talking to the owners of the boxes next to mine searching through their boxes and dismantling their post office trying to find that package with no luck. Each time I go into the post office they always know the question is going to be asked but unfortunately no luck. I asked the person personally that has the same last name as myself which I know, If he accidently received the package which he hasn't and I believe him. Happy Camp Sheriffs office has only one Sheriff called and waiting for a call back to file the report. I printed out the contents of the package to of course give on the report when I get the call back. I have tried everything I could on my side of what I could do. I followed the package from when It left Jason until it arrived which was a Friday, I went to the post office on Monday to pick it up didn't see it in there and went back the following few days to see if there was a mistake with still no Package It was marked as delivered by somebody but not sure who and there are 100's of packages they mark they wouldn't remember that specific package. Don't know now what to do.
Well I just got the news today from my post master that the package was mis delivered and the person that received it, returned it. My wife just went to the post office to pick it up. Wheeeew what a fiasco. When she gets home from work I’ll show everyone.

My cards are in hand, well the ones I submitted. This submission had 2 other collectors in it as well. It’s not my place to show their cards but will show what I submitted, nothing to big but extremely sentimental since the fire took most of my collection and these made it out before the fire to be graded. Wife had these autograph personally when she was way younger.

I completely trust Jason with submissions and knew when he sent it he sent it. Of course all the arrows was pointing at myself because the package said that it was delivered to me and with 2 other people that was in with the submission it really doesn't look good on my end. I am having the post office write a apology letter. So overall what they did was instead of putting it in my box which was 1047, they put it in 1147 PO Box. Overall glad that the cards are in hand and the other submitters will have their cards.
Mr. Tim definitely feels like an Alt. to me. Reeks of the banned losers like blurry, etc.
Sorry, little boy, you're wrong. I'm just not the type of person who pussyfoots around. The package should have had signature confirmation. None of this stress and drama would have happened if he had spent $5.00 on SC and mailed it in a LARGE box.
blurry is a bad example, he had a wealth of knowledge and was always willing to share, help. etc...
I have a wealth of knowledge regarding baseball cards from 1969 to 1994. Feel free to ask me any questions. I can tell you which sets were hard to find (1969 Topps Super and 1969 Topps 4 in 1) and what sets weren't hard to find (1969 Topps posters and 1969 Topps stamps). Ever see a 1974 Topps Deckle Edge card? They were common as dirt at my local store, but no one wanted black and white cards. That's why they're hard to find, not because of scarcity.
I'm also an expert on the investment hype of the late 1980's and the eventual crash of that market. I see it all over again today. No one is collecting cards, they're all investing in cards. By the way, does anyone want 200 Mike Greenwell rookies? How about 300 Sam Horn rookies? Didn't think so...
I feel like Mr. Tim is in a basement somewhere, talking about the good ol' days and the way things used to be, and he's talking about the same good year in 1982.

I feel like you're just a troll looking to stir the pot. You sports card "investors" are going to get a rude awakening ASAP. Seen it before and it's happening again, Look at the pop reports of some of the valuable PSA cards and you'll know we're headed off a cliff. For example, a 1993 Topps Jeter PSA 10 is selling for around $900? There are 3,000 PSA 10 Jeter rookies out there! Get a grip, guys. You're going to lose a lot of money if you're not careful.

That small of an office will not have video surveillance. I would be shocked if it even had an alarm system.
