The Year was 1900…

Turn of the century but not an eventful year other than the Galveston hurricane that killed between 6,000 - 12,000 people.
The set includes each denomination but not coins from each mint (all P except the Barber Quarter), circulated and mint state.
The longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice is it possible for an empire to rise without His aid? Benjamin Franklin

Cool. Are these 19th century coins or 20th century coins?

The century that ran from 1900 to 1999 is known as the 20th century (on the principle that the first century was the one that ran from the year one to the year 99> @BryceM said:
That has been debated for hundreds of years

This topic has proven to be vexatious especially at the turns of centuries, starting at the end of the 17th one, according to a Library of Congress article by Ruth S. Freitag called "Battle of the Centuries." There appears to have been quite a hubbub on the Continent over the matter in the late 1600s, and the British joined in on the next round:
We have uniformly rejected all letters, and declined all discussion upon the question of when the present century ends? as it is one of the most absurd that can engage the public attention, and we are astonished to find it has been the subject of so much dispute, since it appears to be perfectly plain. The present century will not terminate till January 1, 1801, unless it can be made out that 99 are 100. Eighteen centuries are 1800 years, then how can 18 centuries be completed till the year 1800 has expired? What is the meaning of a century, but a clear distinct series of 100 years? How can 100 be completed by 99?
— The Times (London), 26 Dec. 1799
For the same readership but two hundred years later, things had changed:
The world has voted with its cheque book in the debate on precisely when the millennium ends. While pedants continue to pit December 31, 1999, against the end of the year 2000, everyone who is anyone, it seems, has opted for the earlier date as the time to organise what they hope will be the mother of all parties.

Garden variety jewelry case. I have small Velcro strips holding the airtites in place. The airtites can be removed to open so you can examine both sides of the coins.
Why 1900? Turn of the century (sorry 1899 fans), old enough that few people alive actually handle the coins (other than collectors), wouldn’t cost a small fortune (versus same condition 1800). I like the various coin designs for that year.
Yeah, just stirring the pot.
Very nice. I put together a similar set for my dad, born 1912. I like transition years as well. Put together proof sets for 1859, 1874, 1883 and 1909. Not nicely displayed like yours tho. Sitting in a box.
Should add a Lafayette dollar to that set.
Nice collection!
MY GOLD TYPE SET https://pcgs.com/setregistry/type-sets/complete-type-sets/gold-type-set-12-piece-circulation-strikes-1839-1933/publishedset/321940
That is crazy I have started a similar set / ironically my first coin was the P quarter!
I only have the silver coins too - no Lafayette dollar tho!
What were the transitions? I know 1859 and 1909 were transition years for the cent (might have been others). Which transitions occurred in 1874 and 1883?
On this set one thing I had to consider is how far I wanted to go with cracking out coins to display in this way. It’s one thing to crack out $500 or $1000 coins that are not rarities. A whole different story cracking out very expensive coins and/or coins that are truly rare and would very difficult to replace should an opps moment occur.
Troublemaker…lol.
Nice set!
U.S. Type Set
You forgot Keith Richards was born
But seriously: A very neat idea for a set.......and nice display!
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
19th. 20th begins in 1901.
I'm one of those collectors who look for an excuse to buy coins. I'm really a type collector. When possible I combine types in sets. It's an illness.
The 1874 excuse is a little weak - arrows. My type set had three nice 1874 proofs with arrows so I decided to treat the year as a transition set and upgrade the 3c nickel at the same time. The trade dollar was a bonus.
1883 includes three nickel types.
My dad's birth year included the three Barbers, the Indian golds and a St. Gaudens.
The 1859 yielded the new cent as well as 5 Liberty Seated types and a Type 3 3c.
The 1883 gave me 3 Liberty Seated types in addition to the 3 nickels and a nice (redundant) trade dollar and the excuse to buy a nice Morgan proof.
I find this a fun and more challenging way to collect by type.
Thanks for the education.
Yea, you got a bad case of "find an excuse to collect". I try as much as possible to resist. It's only with my wife's help that I have any success...lol.
Very interesting set... and a nice display...Much more interesting than if one were done for the year 2000. Cheers, RickO
Actually I think another cool year would be 1911. Arrange the coins in a similar fashion under a stainless Kimber 1911
@pmh1nic .... I really LIKE that idea..... What a great display, mixing the two interests.... Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, RickO
