After admiring these for some time, I finally acquired an example. This is also the first I've seen with dramatic toning.
The brainchild of Andor Orand, this was "the first square coin-item with sharp corners and serrated edges struck in a die with collar, and the first coin-token designed with the aid of a computer" (quoted from his website). They were produced and sold by Square Deal Productions, Inc. New York and minted by the Medallic Art Company in Danbury, CT. After Square Deal Productions was dissolved in 1984, the dies were donated to the Smithsonian Museum.

Definitely different - I've seen those before but just not interested enough to add one to the collection.

maybe 5+ years ago I reached out to the issuer with an old link I had in my "favorites" and we corresponded for a brief time. I was able to purchase one each of the two different Silver sizes in the original packaging as well as getting some good background information. he was very personable it was an interesting discussion. I tried to acquire any other Squared Quarters he still was willing to sell but things ended as quickly as they started.

Great info @keets ! You've really been on the forefront of these. Glad you reached out and made a deal!

Interesting item.... If I were at a show and saw one, it would catch my attention. Would buy it if the price were reasonable.... Reasonable would be defined as 'What I think it is worth - at the time.'....Cheers, RickO

Krause’s Unusual World Coins, 5th ed., even lists the Squared Quarter, and gives the following mintage numbers: 300 in cupro-nickel-zinc (nickelsilver); 1,310 1/4-oz. size in .999 silver; 602 1/2-oz. size in .999 silver; 12 0.3056-oz. pieces in .999 gold; 15 in bronze; and an unknown number in brass. The gold, CuNiZn, bronze, and brass pieces extant were presumably all struck using the 1/4-oz. dies, although it is unclear if any non-silver pieces were struck using the 1/2-oz. dies, other than the lead trial pieces confirmed in the deed of gift to the Smithsonian.

Successful BST with ad4400, Kccoin, lablover, pointfivezero, koynekwest, jwitten, coin22lover, HalfDimeDude, erwindoc, jyzskowsi, COINS MAKE CENTS, AlanSki, BryceM

They are certainly pricey-although some of the listings make you wonder. The guy still has them on his website for $200 and $300 (1/4 Oz and 1/2 Oz) but I’m not sure if they are available or if he is still around (the post by @keets suggests it might be hard to reach him nowadays).

Thank you! It’s the first graded toned (and maybe only one so far) that I’ve seen so I struck when the opportunity presented itself.
