Question about mint packaging with paper. And sealing with tape.

I sold a 2021 reverse proof eagle set on Ebay in a mint sealed package. The buyer claims when he opened the package it had previously been opened and re sealed, and claimed the box was stuffed with paper, and not styrofoam pieces. The buyer then goes on to say the package was sealed with scotch tape. I know I have read about people receiving mint sealed packages with paper cushioning, but I can't find the comments. Even though the box was supposedly sealed with scotch tape, the buyer went ahead and opened it before contacting me. He wants his money back after cherry picking what I sent.

Paper waded up and styrofoam. Have had both. As a matter of fact I ordered 2 2021W burnished ase’s and 1 separate burnished ase. 2 orders and one had styrofoam and one had wadded up paper. Sounds like a problem. He’s shopping. Sorry buddy Sleezy

Did he even send any pictures of the unwrapping? It sounds like you have to accept the return.

I can imagine you sent him a Mint sealed product and he is just trying to find a way to send it back. Maybe he did not like the condition of the coins as you suggested. I wonder how long he has been on eBay and how his feedback record and comments were. Do you notice any red flags?

Sorry this happened to you. Sometimes you do everything above board as a seller and you get an unethical buyer.

yes. small boxes have either or paper - styrofoam, larger boxes that green bubble stuff, paper or both

if it were scotchtaped shut, why open it in the first place.

also, does the buyer know scotch tape is generally 3/4" to 1" wide AND does the buyer know these are being send sealed with tape, too?

I won't say the buyer is trying to scam you but if he had a problem with the outside of the box, then it should never have been opened.

Here is the packaging on my 2021 Silver Reverse Proof Two-Coin Designer Edition. Outer box sealed with clear plastic packing tape and coins wrapped in paper wrap inside. Note that I reassembled the set to show "as received" as I had already removed before photos.

If the buyer's package was similar, the he received "as packaged" from the mint. As others have asked, who would use Scotch tape as it is 1" wide at best.

I recommend sending the buyer a link to this thread.

Thanks. I will use these responses in my discussion with him.

It could be a misunderstanding of what Scotch tape means. It would not be asking too much at all to ask for a photo explanation of what the buyer means. Ebay also asks for photos as part of the claims process.

One with styrofoam and one with scrunched up paper. How they came from the mint.

Buyer used your sealed coin to cherry a potential 70, not to his liking, he is claiming its been opened Im sure. Problem with selling this type of stuff on ebay. Most likely you will be forced into a return. unfortunately

All of my recent purchases from the mint have had the box taped with clear packing tape (looks like by a 5 year old too). Some of them had paper, not foam.

I opened 2 of these and both were just wrapped with the newsprint type paper, both taped with the light weight 2 3/4" packing tape the mint uses (a normal amount - less than some recent shipments). I've never sold on ebay and only a few purchases, I hate to think it, but it sounds like the buyer opened your set took the best between your set and theirs and now wants to send you the leftovers. Ask for photos of the box, it's pretty easy to tell the mint's packing and taping Good luck.

My Two Coin Reverse Proof Enhanced set was packed as usual with foam insert. I have not had any with the paper wrapping.... Of course, I do not buy any significant volume from the Mint. I imagine the packaging is done at the subcontractor that handles shipping. Therefore, not surprised about the differences. Cheers, RickO
