Yes, and I think G4. Outside shot at G6.
The only issue I see is that divot on the reverse. Otherwise a decent example. I don’t have my resources to check the Sheldon variety.

See the shiny spot center of the Obverse? I think it's just a wee bit too much to straight grade myself.

VG details. Depends on how deep that reverse damage is.
yes, the other side of the divot. I think details also. But I've been surprised before.
Agree entirely - I would say unlikely to straight grade - but I've seen a lot worse problems on early large cents in (frankly unexplainable) straight grade holders.

A lot of porosity gets overlooked, but impact damage less so.

I noticed that. It looks like someone worked on this coin perhaps to remove a small spot. That said, this is a borderline problem. I've seen worse minor problems get a pass. The grading services sometimes make allowances for minor problems on well circulated coins from the 18th century.

Doesn't it line up with the impact on the reverse?

Yes, it does line up. It may or may not be a coincident. The hit on the reverse looks old while the light colored area on the obverse appears to be more recent.

I'm on the fence for a straight grade... I think the reverse hit is heavy enough to have caused some uneven wear on the obverse. I've seen worse in holders though.
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
I think it will straight grade... Likely around a 6.... If not, just send it to me... I will forever appreciate it as a straight grade in my collection. Cheers, RickO

Because it is a full date 1798 I do believe the TPGs will overlook the slight problems and straight grade this at least a solid G04

Hell of a find did you dig it?

"Agree entirely " - a STRONG NO!
"I would say unlikely to straight grade" - a BIT of Doubt?
"But I've seen a lot worse problems on early large cents in straight grade holders." - So who knows?
Only one way to find out.....................

Bought it at my LCS in 1989 for $35.
I like it.

Late die state S-153?
Otherwise I’m just not figuring out the variety. I thought the obverse cud would make it fairly easy.
