About the only good thing about this very expensive and repetitive offering, is that it might be the last new gold coin for 2021.

  • GhosOfRudyGhosOfRudy Posts: 108 ✭✭✭

Looks like they've done the "uncirculated" since 2006 based on those mintage figures (dated some)

    https://goldeagleguide.com/mintages/

I don't know prior prices, but 2012-W is the lowest I see.

    2021 mintage is 9,100....the 2020 mintage was 7,000.

Gold is currently $1,763/oz. ...the 2021-W Unc AGE is 91.67% pure gold.

Sell price is $2,620.....do the math.

Only a hard core modern gold collector would buy this coin.

The Mint never gouged the coin collecting public to this extent in years past.

    Am I wrong?

Secondary market only for moderns when I decide I desire to stack some of these bullion related issues. Tired of the high prices and games especially the last two years from the mint. Almost all issues are substantially less-even graded 70's-than USM prices.

It consists of an ounce of gold but the price gouging by the mint is rather shocking.
I am passing up on this one because of having picked up the American Liberty 2021 High Relief Gold Coin in 24K on Aug. 19th and that is good enough for me.

Was thinking of picking this one up as a carry piece and my first gold coin to celebrate some recent financial achievements. Not sure I want to though with a 50%+ premium. May just grab a bullion coin instead. Thoughts? Was really wanting this one but now not sure.

Get a $20 lib or saint in AU

Common dates will have much less premium

A Mexico 50 peso is even beefier if you have a tight belt.

For a pocket piece I would suggest what ever you like for bullion level plus maybe ten percent if it’s an old common date. There’s a whole world of scratch and ding coins at bullion. Just my opinion

I guess a better question would be: How long would the burnished finish hold up when carrying it in a pocket daily? Like other than the mint mark, how long til this coin and a bullion one would be indistinguishable, or would the finish hold up for a decade as long as I'm not abusing it.

I specifically am wanting a 2021 to mark the year.

I think you would be the forum test pilot on this one

    True.

Managed to recently acquire a slabbed 1908 without motto in MS 63 for slightly over spot.

No thanks... Do not want to add at this - IMO - ridiculous premium. Cheers, RickO

3/4 a bottle of wine me from last night was pretty set on buying this today despite the ridculous premium. Sober me just bought the type 2 2021 BU from Apmex for $650 cheaper.

A bottle of cheap wine on Father's day in 2009 made my wife go out with me and sign on the dotted line to buy me a motorcycle

She has been regretting that decision ever since she became sober from that awful tasting wine and politely declines my offers to buy her booze on birthdays, anniversaries and other dates of significance. o:)

Its a pass for me as well. At 2650 with a higher mintage than several years prior, no upside.

It would be a better investment to buy $2.6k of Bitcoin.

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 4,249 ✭✭✭✭✭

A few more approximate burnished uncirculated mintages:

    2011 was 8,729
    2012 was 5,829
    2013 was 7,293
    2014 was 7,902
    2015 was 6,533
    2016 was 6,887
    2017 was 5,800
    2018 was 8,518
    2019 was 6,365
    2020 so far 6,284

My guess is this issue will sell less than 5,000 because the price is just way too high. If more sell at first, there will be hundreds of cancellations or returns. I doubt dealers will even buy very many to get graded, as 69's will be big money losers,

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 4,249 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wonder how many Pinehurst and others will buy at that price before saying they have enough. There is a lot of demand for proof eagles, but these were never very popular.

Not for me at this price.
I am impatiently waiting for my 3 2021 Peace Dollars!
Buy silver bullion, much more upside potential! 3 -kilos for less than one 'dog' Type 2 unc, with money left over.

Unless you collect these, I don’t see the value here at issue price vs other options with dry powder. Just my opinion.

I have several 2011 2012 ones, won't but this one, too expensive.

  • Sorry for the newbie question. What's the difference between this coin and the 2021 Type 2 BU that are being sold for hundreds less online? They seem like the same description: American Eagle 2021 One Ounce Gold BU, West Point mintage.

2021 Type 2 BU is bullion without mint mark and minted numbers in the hundreds of thousands. UNC has a mint mark and I believe a different finish and numbers just north of 9,000 minted.

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 4,249 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well it looks like I am wrong again and there are a lot of buyers.

Obviously a lot of new players in the game. It already may have sold 8,000 and about 1,000 left if the numbers started at 9100.

    Wow.

Wait until the Morgan’s and peace dollar drop. Then we will see how many new collectors there are. (Lots and lots)

Looks like it is still available almost two and a half hours later (2:25 PM EST).

Reading the descritpion, am now curious as to what other "gold coins" have the new anti-counterfeit reeded edge variation?

  • Jzyskowski1Jzyskowski1 Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭

    All the type 2’s

Only 636 left. Just hard to believe.

I sure wish the folks buying all these lately were new long term collectors, and that would be really nice, but probably wishful, if not completely irrational thinking.

What else could they be, if not collectors?
I doubt they're flippers - then again, I have doubted the strength of Pinehurst and their low profit game before!

But seriously, other than Pinehurst, there was no interest (that I'm aware of) at all out there from the other "normal" buyers.

That is truly crazy. I really wonder who they are selling to, that want to pay so much more for these, to justify these type of premium offers. Regardless, there are less than 500 left.

Perhaps dealers are buying to fuel the SP 70 AGE first year of issue of Type II frenzy.

    Edited to correct

I see from their Twitter Feed ( https://twitter.com/ParkAveNumis ) that they are indeed indicating what you posted but I can't get over the fact that they don't have any tweets from all the other crazy sales this year?

Are they only into Gold and not Silver? They didn't even buy the Gold offering this year...and now they're buying this for $250 over??

    ???

Very intriguing indeed. Perhaps proxy for someone else???

I know for sure that Bullion Shark is staying away from these dabbling only in the gold buffalo and right now their website is full of the Morgan and Peace dollar set graded MS70 for 2500$

    bullionsharks.com/modern-rare-coins/2021-morgan-and-peace-dollars/

It would indeed be very interesting to see who all are going to the behind scenes wheeler-dealers.

Since nearly everyone here has written this off as an undeniable loser it will probably be a winner. Wouldn’t be the first time. If I didn’t just spend $3700 I would take the gamble.
