    How's this.
    If I look at it closely, it look to me to be over struck on another silver coin.

    It's possible. Portugal overstruck coins regularly--typically Spanish pieces. That was primarily when they moved the capital of Portugal to Brazil to avoid Napoleon. But it probably happened earlier, too.

    That's my best quess if I look at it hard enough I think I can see the headline/outline of a Spanish reale.
    Has to be dated earlier then 1707 if that's the case.

    I really like it, took 2 tries at auction.
    Got outbid the first time by 3x my bid.
    Second time it showed up I questioned the seller what happened and they said the bidder backed out.
    I got it for half of what I was willing to pay the first time.
    I think it books for 2x what I paid and I had some Free casino winnings, so WinWin.

    I've got an interesting gold bit too.

    Pretty sure that one was tested for purity in a pirate's mouth.

    I have one coin like those in the OP... but it is a counterfeit....Though real silver. Cheers, RickO
