Long Beach report

I arrived at the show about 45 mins before they opened the doors. There was already a line of people waiting to get in. Vaccine cards or negative Covid test were checked at the doors and mask were required to enter. Got checked in and took my place in the line that continued to snake around the convention hall. Doors opened right at 10am and we all funneled in. Going in I really didn’t have high expectations but was excited to get back to a show after over a year.

My first stop was to one of my favorite dealers CRO! He always has premium quality coins and today was no different. He has a really sweet $20 Lib OGH with Gold CAC and a very nice lower graded 1793 cent that caught my eye. But sadly for me, he did not have a single Seated Dollar. John and his wife took some time to help me fill out multiple submission forms that I needed to get to PCGS ASAP. I am reholdering a coin and trying to cross over some Seated Dollars from NGC to PCGS. I have heard that pcgs is pretty tough on NGC crossovers so I am trying to keep expectations low… The show has a special where if the coin doesn’t cross your only charged $10. Really couldn’t think of a reason not to with a deal like that. The PCGS line was LONG!

I did a quick pass of the bourse floor scanning for quality Seated Dollars. Saw about one or two dozen lower quality piece that I had no interest in. Only one CAC approved circulated business strike Seated Dollar in the building…. Don Rinkor had her but I have the date covered and liked mine better so decided to pass. I did send pics to a couple of buddies but they also passed. I know it will be snatched up before long.

I did manage to find a couple of tougher dates but again I had the dates covered and like my examples much better so I passed. I forget the name of the dealer that had them. I snapped a couple pics to share only because you don’t always see these dates available.

Aisle after aisle I walked and I concluded that 80% of the coins at this show we’re Morgan dollars. Bust halves seemed to be well supplied as well. At one point I stopped by and spoke to Wade from Northern Nevada Coin to remind him I am still looking for a nice 71cc $. Since that is the last date I need I was actively looking and asking around. I did manage to find one example in a NGC details cleaned holder for over 11k. Not quite what I want for my set but still enjoyed finding her.

The highlight of the show for me was finally meeting Pierre Fricke in person. I sat with him for about an hour and looked through a couple hundred of his Confederate notes and asked him a ton of questions that I have been wondering about since I started my collection a few months ago. I have bought several notes from him previously but it was good to put a face to the name. There are many notes that I wanted but was unable to buy anything today because I am saving for a coin deal that will likely come through in the next month or so. Here are a couple of random notes we discussed….

I was not really looking for it but there was plenty of bullion available. Didn’t ask for prices but I did sell a gold Buffalo to a dealer for $45 over spot. Another thing that I did notice was the large amount of sports card dealers. It’s not my thing but they seemed extremely busy from what I could tell. They seemed to take up about 20% of the tables.

There were a lot of empty dealer tables. Total speculation but I heard several people say that the Covid entrance rules were to blame for some of the empty tables. The biggest disappointment was the LSCC table being empty the whole day. Typically there are at least a couple of members there to go and shoot the breeze with. But not this time.

I am planning to return before the end of the show to pick up my coins from PCGS. If there is anything worth updating I’ll definitely keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the report. You sold a gold Buffalo for $45 over spot? Seems low, did it have issues? Cheers, RickO

I don’t follow the metals market like I use to. The Buffalo was raw and not perfect but in good shape overall. I was happy to move it.

Great report. The show I attended two weeks ago also was all about Morgan’s. I have another show this weekend. I am hoping there will be a better selection. Enjoy your return trip. I hope the crossover experience goes well for you.

    Thanks for the nice report.

Pierre is a good guy. I spent a lot of time at his table at summer FUN, as he is one of the few guys that carries nice large cents that aren’t priced to the moon. And I did notice people buying his confederate currency then too!

Nice images of the Seated Dollars... the whole POR sticker on the 1857 and 1855 is so annoying. Why have the sticker on the slab to begin with?

    Thanks for the report.

If you’re a very specialized collector finding something at a show that you like without compromising is extremely difficult.

I attend shows primarily to network and socialize and rarely buy anything. I also enjoy lot viewing.

Nice report. When I was buying a "P.O.R" on a coin meant overpriced ... pass. Morgans, Morgans everywhere ... that seems to be what most shows have become. The sports card market is apparently very hot right now so more of those dealers was no surprise. I wonder how long that boom will last? The sports card market seems to be only about making money quickly. I wonder how many true collectors will still be around when the crash comes?

    All glory is fleeting.

With sports cards you can now bid on an auction to watch (online) a dealer open a pack of cards with those cards getting mailed to you after opening. People trade cards as players do well or tank. They are commodities now.

Topps lost the MLB and NBA rights to Fanatics. Big changes coming to the card industry. Direct to consumer products should all but kill the card stores. That is all for the other forum though. So far the coin shows here have not involved cards but I guess it could be coming. I will be at a show Sunday and will watch.

A buddy of mine received his crossover results yesterday. He went 1 of 3 with the one that did cross actually upgraded with a plus. I’m expecting results sometime later today. I believe 6 out of the 7 really deserve it but it is likely I end up 2 or 3 out of 7. Anyone else receive results back yet?

  • CrustyCrusty Posts: 1,129 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just got results back… I went 4 out of 7 on my cross over attempts.

So far I'm zero for 7. Ugh... still waiting on one.
