Is this one worth cracking and resubmitting? Gretzky 3.5

Just wondering people’s thoughts. Came back at 3.5. Think that’s incredibly undergraded. Thought it was a pretty good card, was at least hoping to hold value to what I paid for it. Thought a 5 at worst, a 7 at best. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

Must be a surface issue we can’t see In a scan. Is there someone experienced in grading nearby you that you could have take a close look? They’ll likely find something.

Looking at this on two separate monitors but the back seems to have at least one wrinkle if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me.

Might be 2 creases showing on the back in both Es in his name. waynE gREtzky
Hard to tell
also the stain above the Y on the back in waYne
Is that a KSA or SGC slab? GIve us high res pics with a tilt.....
Must be SGC. KSA would not have graded that as low as 3.5
Not a card I’m super familiar with but do the potential back creases line up to his thigh scratch? Is that the small barely visible ripple in the cardboard, perhaps?
It’s a really nice looking card regardless of grade, though I know the exponential value increases by number assigned and probably is lower than what you’d hoped for from what I gather.
If SGC or KSA deemed it a 3.5, you won’t ‘do better’ with PSA, if that is your hope. Therefore, I wouldn’t want to put more money into the card unless I was hoping for a similar (and maybe lower) grade and some added Registry value in the PSA slab.

SGC and it’s actually their high res scan, though I only took a screenshot. I’m not sure I could do any better with the resolution.
Do appreciate your feedback though.
I checked and there are no creases whatsoever. I guess that’s why I’m so baffled. Centering is great. I was wondering if the slightly frosted corners had something to do with it. What appears to be wrinkling/scratching on the back is actually just the paper stock fibers.
This was one I had submitted at the $250 level, so I’m wondering if I got one of their more seasoned graders?
Actually got grades back on a regular submission yesterday, and I did pretty well. Pulled an 8 with a 73 Clemente, an 8.5 with 76 Reggie and Munson, a 9 on an Upper Deck Jordan White Sox, and a 7.5 on a 61 Aaron. Most of the others were 7s with some 5s and 6s mixed in on cards I bought from buyers I wasn’t as familiar with.
As always, appreciate your feedback. Thank you much!!
I have a pretty good dealer about an hour away. When I get a chance, I will bring it in to him to see what he says. Thank you!
Good eye. Looked at it under lit magnification. Doesn’t appear to be a stain, but the actual fibers of the paper stock. Maybe I’m missing something?
It also appears to be the same for what some pointed out as potential creases. Paper stock.
Appreciate your feedback! Thank you!
@NeverSawMantle
I spent a good twenty minutes just now staring at the scan and other highler graded copies so here’s what I’ll say:
1) The rookies Brown, Mantle, Jordan, Gretzky - these post war, pre 1990 cards are semi the Four Horsemen of the Cardpocalypse at this point. Awesome card!
2) These cards getting extra scrutiny, while an offensive sentiment to some, is fairly intuitive to me. When every fractional grade is a huge increase in value AND since those cards tend to be the ‘auction highlights’ they are going to be graded a little differently because of their increased visibility and broad appeal.
3) Knowing that, I’ll offer an explanation of that technical grade. It’s not the number I’d give it and it is a harsh interpretation but here goes:
The card is very off center, L to R, and also a little bit off Top to Bottom so you’re upside in today’s environment is incredibly limited from the jump; perhaps more than you might have realized. In addition, you have three corners with visible wear, maybe four. While that maybe scoots by better on a white bordered card, on a blue border that whiteness is a killer. There’s a smallish stain in the blue upper right corner, too, and a few ‘small but there’ print fish eyes and inequities.
The reverse also has some issues - the splotch within the skate above W in Wayne, a few stray print dots or mild circular stains in open areas and two light marks centered on skate (middle and hitting from top) that draw the eye.
Realistically? I think 5 was a realistic guess on your part and the overall strength of the cards aesthetic would have going with a 4 to 4.5.
PS - @blurryface will yell at me for this: “Tim, you see that centered oil drop? .5 ALL DAY!!!!”
PPS - I listen/read and learn a lot 😂

A screen shot of a "high-res" image is just a lower res pic the size of your phone screen. You need to use the actual url of the photo or download it and upload it.
I can't believe you paid SGC $250 to grade it. For that price you could have sent it to PSA. Even if it graded higher, an SGC slab is a value deduction (compared to PSA slabbed cards) Even a PSA 7 is only worth $2k-ish. You paid the SGC rate for a $3500-$7500 value card. Did you think it was OPC?
Based on the cards posted and the grading done, this seems to be “fun” money. Still, if memory serves, a lot of these are recent purchases and the poster is new to grading.
I wouldn’t encourage people to learn lessons in this expensive of fashion but if you’ve got the money I suppose there is no harm in it.
It is still a blue chip card and if the purchase price was reasonable (raw card discount or part of a lot, etc.) then there’s probably still some meat on the bone and if you’re holding it long term at the end of the day, it’s still a sharp looking graded Gretzky.

Are those scratches on the upper left side of his pants and to the right of the bottom of the helmet on the card surface or on the case?
@Jayman1982 i just looked with loop, and no scratches. The case doesn’t even appear to be scratched, so I’m not sure how it showed up like that in scan.
@1951WheatiesPremium it was fun money until I ran out. 😳 Appreciate your analysis of the card. The 1980 Hockey cards are one that I’m not familiar with either. Hard to tell what is centered and what isn’t because of the offset because of the left to right descending stripes. It is something I still plan to hold onto. Would like to get my hands on a PSA 7, but fixed pricing sits about $3800 at best.
@RufussCkingston you make very good points. I won this card in an auction that wasn’t eBay and didn’t have the best photos. Would just assume by a PSA7 to hold onto, but I can’t afford one. Doesn’t seem like you can get them for 2k though. Thought I could beat the house, and I didn’t. This was also the first of four cards I submitted. The ones that posted yesterday came back pretty much as expected. One nine, three 8.5s, an 8 on a 73 Clemente and a 7.5 on a 61 Aaron. Rest were mostly 7s with some 5s and 6s thrown in. I have been learning along the way and I know that I don’t have anything worth submitting to any of the grading companies for $250.
Thanks to everyone for your feedback. You’re helping me learn, and I appreciate that.
Frankly, 3.5 is a complete joke. There isn’t a 4 out there remotely close to this one in quality.
