NGC World CoIn Price Guide reports the oldest at 1809.

And yes, they are equivalent to Spanish 8 reales. Most of them were overstruck on 8 reale coins, and the undertype is usually clearly visible.

Prior to 1809, Brazil issued no silver-dollar-sized coins. The largest were 640 reis, which was equivalent to 2/3 of a Spanish dollar. Coins above 640 reis were all gold coins.

But if you are interested in Brazilian crowns, as Sapyx writes, you can start with the 1695 640 reis.

What coins are the most expensive in the 950 reis series?

The 960 reis series is neatly divided into two: Portuguese rule (1809-1822), and Brazilian Empire (1823-1834). The Portuguese-era ones are all reasonably cheap and common, except for 1822-B; in the Imperial series, anything dated 1827 or later is pricey; the 1832-34 coins, with a total mintage of just over 3000 across the three years, are the scarcest in the series, with just a few 1834 coins known in private hands. The series ends in 1834, at which time a currency reform revalued the reis. The new Spanish-dollar-sized coin (1834-1847) was the 1200 reis, and these were not made by overstriking older coins.

There's also a sought-after "spelling error": on some 1823 coins, the motto reads "IN HOC IGNO VINCES" , instead of "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES".
