Grade this 1928-s buffalo nickel

Here is a 1928-s buffalo nickel that has already been graded/encapsulated. When looking at the front of this coin your eyes
immediately go to the area to the south EAST of the Indian’s chin. How much does all of that black residue affect the grade?

Struck with worn dies on both sides, black maybe grease residue from trying to prolong die life. I'd give it a 64 ?

You mean to the south east of the Indian's chin? I would grade it a 63.

    1. Luster looks nice.

IMO, if the coin were otherwise nearly perfect, the eye appeal of the grease would limit the grade to 66 or 66+. I wouldn't want a 67 with that. However, since the coin isn't otherwise perfect, the combination of grease and hits with good luster leads me to 65.

MS65, and while the black stuff is a bit distracting I find my eye is drawn to the hits in the hair as much or more than the black.

I’ll go with 64 also, and an overall decent example of a 28S.

I think MS64... the dark spots (I think) might be less of a distraction "in hand"... more of a distraction looking at an image that's been enlarged to that extent...

Looks like a 64 to me.... A lot of dings on the obverse... Nice reverse... Cheers, RickO

MS64 would be my guess black spot not in area of importance for grading would surprise me if given MS65 with all the nicks on the obverse but then again the graders take the Reverse into consideration a lot of the time for some reason when giving the grade, Just my opinion.

Strike is terrible, with the reverse a little better than the obverse. Worn dies on both sides. Typical late die state branch mint coin. I don't think the black stuff matters.

Here is the slab and to me the grunge near the chin keeps it out of a super grade. Even at the 65 level
it seems inconsistent with that grade

It's a very nice coin. The look of the coin is even more appealing in the PCGS slab than your photo. It has a hue to it, right?

I was guessing MS65, maybe even MS66 based on your photo.

Here's the trueview of it, looks MUCH better but I still like it as a 65. I bet it has tons of luster, however.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Nice - could be the eye appeal pushed it up
