Hello all, I found the keelboat at a gas station where I met my wife so it does carry a certain sentimental value. But my question is why is the keelboat dark and the peace shiny? I am aware of how this error occurs. So no need to explain the whole annealing process. But I’m almost questioning if the keelboat is missing a layer?? Which only causes more questions as nickels are not clad coins?? Help please

There are three layers. If you look at the keelboat reverse above the sail and to the right their is a diagonal section that is dull brownish gray color (bottom layer). Then there is the dark gray burnt color that covers 80% of the coin. (2nd burnt layer). Lastly there is the copper on top (3rd layer)???? Help me understand this please. And thank you in advance. Happy hunting😎

Nickels are a solid alloy, not clad, so there are not separate layers.

The keelboat looks like it has something (paper?) on part of it.

  • Where are you looking on the keelboat?

  • Did you really read my post sir?
