The twist in the Tyrant US type set

GazesGazes Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭✭✭

I really enjoyed looking at the amazing US type set the tyrant has put together. What I especially liked was his twist on what coins to include. Where possible he had each type represented by 4 coins---a type that was made for circulation, a type for proof, and a coin that was untoned and a coin that was toned. It is a type set on steroids. What a project and what an amazing collection to look at.

FYI--you can see the collection by going to www.thetyrantcollection.com and clicking on US Type coins

WOW! Many of these coins are worth multiples of my entire collection. Very kind of Tyrant to share these coins w/the public via shows and website vs keeping them hidden away. Very cool to browse through!

That really is an awesome set. Hope I have a chance to see it one day.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: The Tyrant collection is far more impressive than possibly any other collection every assembled in private hands.

I will also add that I think he would be the most interesting person in numismatics to speak with.

This is a nice way to do it.

There are additional ways to do this but for me the jist is to have different looks.

    For example:

    • made for circulation, uncirculated and circulated.
    • for silver, it can be nice to have a DMPL, and a non-PL.
    • for copper, I also like to have a BN, RB, RD and toned coin.

Nice set! It's interesting it looks like a lot of the PCGS coins are shot through the slabs, and thus not likely to be TrueViews.

What an amazing collection. Bookmarked for future admiration. I loved the Indian Pennies--they were gorgeous.

Maybe others had seen this before but I was unaware of the website. A lot to take in and comprehend. So many spectacular coins. One ridiculous shouldn't exist coin is the 1865 half eagle in NGC 67 Cameo.
I see you can order the books and I believe I will order book 7.

I wonder how many other collections the Tyrant has that they haven't
    shared with us yet?

Nice collection, but its just a super rich person buying all the best coins. Probably doesn't even enjoy them. I'm sure 99 percent of collectors have more fun with their collections.

    Disagree.

Some of those coins are literally one of a kind or one of two or three known. To build such a collection takes patience and commitment.

There's also no 7070 for the non-U.S. material which requires that the collector determines what constitutes the series. Even the whole concept of Tyrants in gold is unique. He, or she, has likely put more time and effort into the collection than you have.

Anybody with a Redbook can collect U.S. series. And slabs don't even require the collector to learn how to authenticate or grade. But to collect 2000 years of coinage cannot be done by buying a Redbook or a 7070 or choosing a registry set.

You might say that about Hansen, although if you don't know him don't make assumptions. Hansen had the Eliasberg path to follow. Tyrant has created his own path, even in the way he assembled the U S type.

Wonder what will eventually become of these large collections- Tyrant, Hansen, etc- auction, donation, divided among heirs?

could not disagree more. The Tyrant built his collection in secret for over 20 years. Almost no one knew of his collection until recently. I highly doubt you methodically hand pick coins over a 20 year span doing something you dont enjoy.

Wow. Got any hot stock tips or other deep prognostications? That's really rich making those assumptions for someone you don't even know or never met.

Indeed an incredible collection. I am glad that a wealthy individual has an interest in coins and assembles such a collection. Viewing such coins, en masse, is a great pleasure that most of us would not experience otherwise.
Thank you Mr. Tyrant.... Cheers, RickO

Agreed. If such a collection, in full, were on loan to a museum I'd be willing to hop on a plane to go see it.

Absolutely, incredible set - At ANA they were selling for $10 a book on the Tyrant type set. Had to buy it.
