First CAC submission, or What CAC thought of my 1921 Peace PCGS MS63 OGH Vam 1H

My first CAC submission. Just 8 pieces--I joined several months back when it looked like I'd be going deep on an old school collection. But that didn't pan out. So I gathered the small handful of the pieces I did acquire from that collection and sent 'em in.
CAC was top notch to deal with. They phoned to ask clarification, finished quickly, reshipped even faster.

The good news is they gold beaned a 1938-S merc and gave a green to the 1938-D buffalo from the same old collection. Also slapped a gimme green bean on an MS61 $5 half eagle from my own stash.

But the reason I sent this submission in was the 1921 Peace PCGS MS63 OGH Vam 1H.

The 1921 vam 1H are circulation examples struck from proof dies. Not any proof. Satin proofs. The number of proof 1921 dollars struck is a matter of some contention. It's thought to be around 10. After those proofs were struck, the mint apparently decided to recycle their proof dies into their stock of circulation strike dies. And I've been thinking about that. Maybe someone more knowledge about manufacturing proofs can chime in.

What I think of as proof coins--I who came of age in the 1980s--are the deep cameo or ultra cameo deep mirror black and white coins. Those are made from specially prepared planchets that, according to the Mint's website, are "specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes...struck at least twice" Fair enough. But I wonder: did the mint specially prepare and hand polish early 20th century satin proof planchets? If not, couldn't you argue that circulation examples struck from satin proof dies are really, really close to satin proofs?
Consider this: In January of 2019, HA sold an actual NGC Satin Proof 64 for $50,000. The next day, they sold a circulation strike PCGS Vam-1H (66) for $19,200!

Anyway, do you want to hear my story or not?

Of the thousands of 1921 peace dollars CAC has undoubtedly seen, only 1265 have been awarded green stickers across all grades. But CAC has only awarded three gold stickers, total: An MS62, an MS63, and an MS64.

So I wasn't counting on getting a gold bean. But I was hoping.

I'm not saying she's necessarily a 65. But if you squint just right, couldn't you maybe think this beauty deserved a gold 64?

A gold bean doesn't mean it's a marginal 64. It has to be an A/B 64. So, if you have to squint to get to 64, it isn't a gold bean.

So when I break into my Good Scotch, all of a sudden I'm married to a supermodel - I was squinting and got my face slapped.

I'm curious what they needed clarification on.
